Fraudulent transactions on Lloyds Avios Amex cards

If you own a Lloyds Avios Rewards Amex card, you'd better check your statement, as it looks like many people got their cards cancelled because of fraudulent transactions, as reported in other forums.
I got mine replaced at the end of October, after I spotted a couple of unusual transactions in a couple of shops in the US (where I haven't been for three years).

Is there any evidence of a hack, as of course, there's quite a few people with those cards.

The Avios Duo cards use the Amex and MasterCard on the same account, so is there something specific to the Amex card being targeted here?

I nearly posted about this the other day. CS confirmed to me that they've had a lot of calls, the Amex appears to be affected specifically. In my case they spotted and blocked the fraudulent transaction (in the US) so nothing got through. My MasterCard hasn't been cancelled.

I suspect an online breach too. I'm very careful with my card and have only used it in-store in the UK and with reputable sites online. It's certainly curious that only the Amex cards are affected...

    When do these date from?

I cannot find anything dodgy on my statements (Well, Greggs, but that's dodgy for my waistline), but will keep an eye out.

I noticed my card was blocked last Saturday (they didn't bother to contact me), not sure exactly when the transaction was attempted.

So also beware that Lloyds will block cards without notification and there's no indication that your card's blocked when you login to online banking, everything appears normal...

So far, reports I've read in other forums are from people who claim to have had issues with the Amex card only, and all related to fraudulent transactions in the US.

I called to cancel my card on Oct 26th.
And got the replacement already the following week, but I can't use it with chip&pin, because the PIN hasn't been issued yet.

I'll keep an eye on my end, and if any evidence of a systemic issue arises, I'll alert the MSE Forum team in case a general alert is warranted.

Nothing untoward on mine, but thanks for the heads up.
  • I have a Lloyds Choice Rewards AMEX and it was blocked last week without any word from them. After I called them they said there was a fraudulent transaction but didn't give me anything more specific. Now I'm waiting for the replacement card. So this applies for the Choice Rewards too.

  • far more likely to be a data breach at a merchant than a hack if the transactions are card not present

don't see the point in scaremongering
