My MIL bought me a couple of tops for my birthday.
Very nice of her, but both look awful on me and they have those frilly 3/4 length sleeves that would drive me nuts. One is too short and the other fits just oddly.
Anyway, she has kindly given me the receipts, but I have just noticed they were purchased at the start of October, and it says on them that they need to be returned by the 16th October for a full refund.
What are my odds of getting an exchange for something else or even gift card? We're talking M&S and Debenhams here, so plenty of stuff I would wear.
I was planning on taking them back this weekend, but that will involve dragging three kids with me and quite a lot of hassle, so I am tying to figure out the odds of a refund/exchange/giftcard before attempting this journey!

Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I hate those sleeves as well!
tbh I'd be cheeky enough to ring up first, explain the situation and if they agree to the exchange, get the name of the person you spoke to.
Would save you the stress if they didn't budge0 -

We have taken something back after about 3 months with the original receipt and got a full refund even though the item had by then been reduced to half price.
The cashier had to get a higher member of staff to sort it on the till and it took a while to get authorised.
M&S staff were great and understood why we took it back so late.0 -
It is beyond 35 days but after reading knightstyle's post I now have some hope that I can persuade them to at least give me a credit note for the full amount.
Saying that, last time I bought something in there the woman serving was such a grumpy moo! Will avoid her!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

I think it depends on the individual stores. My friend tried to return 2 jumpers that her mother had bought and which were completely the wrong size , the local store refused to allow the return as she was 6 days past the last return date. I went with her to a different store 2 days later and they refused as well. Couldn't even get a credit note.
Mind you my local M and S are not helpful at the best of times, everything is too much trouble for the staff who prefer to stand and gossip about being forced to work departments or hours they don't like.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. They will probably offer a exchange or credit note as a good will gesture. You can always say that they were bought as gifts for you and they may be more inclined to help.
Usually, as long as you have the receipt and exchange its all alright, just try it, the worst they can say is no!0 -
The only non returnable items to M and S will be the yellow label reduced items. These are final sales.
No idea about Debenhams.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

Well thumbs up to Debenhams. A full refund on to a gift card with two years to spend it. Hurrah.
And thumbs down to M&S as indeed the top had been reduced in the sale to £10 when MIL bought it, and apparently they would have told her that she only had 14 days to return it.
Unfortunately she bought it more than two weeks before my birthday so there was never any chance of a full refund. I was offered £2.49 which was the final sale price.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

I think M & S changed their sale item return to 14 days a few months ago. It also says on the receipt that sale items have this timescale.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
