I won! But now they want it back!!!

Earlier in the year I won a lovely pair of riding boots. I got the email and about 3 months later, after much chasing, Grub boots finally sent me my prize. They didn't send me the colour they had promised, because they had sold out in the time it took to send it to me!!!

Then abut 3 weeks ago I got another parcel from Grub boots. I thought amazing - a great win. However, today they have rung to say it was sent to me by mistake as the marketing person went on maternity leave and the person doing her cover sent out prizes to the wrong people!

So now I have to send the boots back - even though I have worn them!:mad:

Beware of Grub Boots
Prizes:
2013 - £3,500; 2014 - £8,200; 2015 - £9,300; 2016 - £6,500; 2017 - £9,500; 2018 - £1,600; 2019 - £2,100; 2020 - £2360!
Thanks for everyone's help getting these xx

So they sent you 2 pairs? Was the second pair in the right colour?

Usually I would go marching in guns blazing, but the fact (if I'm right) they sent you two is prob a bit 50/50. With hindsight, 'what boots?' might have been the reply to have used. I'd prob reluctantly agree to send at least one pair back but only if they covered postage/sent a courier! I certainly wouldn't pay to send them.

Let us know how it goes.

Ask them what pair to send back? I imagine it would be the second pair?

If you queried it when they arrived and they said keep them they cannot expect them to be returned now. Even if you didn't contact them when you got the boots it is up to them to either pay your costs to send them back or to arrange for them to be collected.

I suspect having won a competition with them would probably count as having ordered something so you haven't just randomly been sent boots
(Because you had actually ordered goods from the company and they sent you extra items in error, you have a duty to return them as they're not strictly unsolicited

No Obligation to Pay for Return
As the receiver, you have no obligation to pay for the return costs of the goods if they are unwanted. If the company does demand payment for return costs, report them to your local Trading Standards Department.
Inform the company of the mistake, and wait to hear back from them. They should send you details of how to return the item with minimal inconvenience and no cost.
  • It is the second pair they want back, which were an entirely different style. I had entered a competition to win the second pair so, obviously wrongly, assumed I had won them. I almost gave them away to a friend who works at an animal charity because I didn't need two pairs, lucky I didn't!
I guess the part that annoys me the most is how long it has taken. It's been 3 weeks since I received them - if they had notified me sooner and apologised I would have happily just not have received them and had them returned to sender, but having just got a random phone call demanding for a time they can be picked up and denying all fault was a bit irritating.

I would check where they publicly post the winners list. It's all very well for them to claim they sent the second parcel to the wrong person, but I can't really see how that would happen. Maybe they have something in the terms and conditions that you can't win twice in the same year ? Or maybe that's how they feel- and why they didn't put the return request in writing.

I think you won twice and they had second thoughts.

I won a decent prize (about £150 worth) a few months ago, the company sent my prize, all good, but then only 2/3 weeks later, sent an identical one. I messaged them straight away about the mistake, and instead of thanking me, or apologising that I'd have to hang around for a collection (too big for me to carry to PO), they were a bit on the rude side - not my fault you have a nitwit in the office!

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

Just tell them you've been wearing them and they are filthy...may not wNt them back then!
  • They have now let me keep the boots as I had worn them, but they made it clear that I was a bad person for taking someone else's prize!

I was told it was my responsibility to have told them they had sent me boots when I wasn't expecting any and that I should have thoroughly read the paperwork enclosed that said someone else's name!

There was no paperwork other than the address label that was clearly made out to me!

You are not a bad person-they obviously don't want to take responsibility for what happened, it was their employee's fault. I think their comps should be approached with caution if this is how they treat people, makes their business look bad.
