EE say that BT are restricting our broadband speed

Hi,

We upgraded to EE fibre broadband about a year ago and have been happy with the service provided. They claim 40Mb speed and we have found this to be pretty accurate. However, over the last few weeks we have noticed that although our internet service is fine through the day, it drops down from about 5pm. I am sitting here now at 10pm and a speed check tells me I am getting 0.73Mb. This is very frustrating as not only can I not watch iPlayer as I am currently trying to, but we are paying for a service we are not receiving and still have 6 months left on the contract.

We have contacted EE about this, and after completing the usual checks on the router, they have claimed that this is due to BT restricting our bandwidth (if that is the correct term) at peak times. They were supposed to arrange for a BT engineer to come out to check but so far we've heard nothing. I am tempted to cancel the contract with EE as they are not providing what they are supposed to, but am concerned that changing provider won't help if BT Openreach is the problem. Perhaps I should just change to bog standard internet since I seem to be unable to get fibre speeds in the evening when I use it, and save myself a lot of money.

If anyone has any advice or experience of similar I'd be glad to hear it.

Thanks!

I suspect it is nothing to do with Openreach at all. It is far more likely that EE's network is highly congested at peak times, as is the net generally.
  • Thanks for the reply, and apologies for taking so long to realise you had done so! Perhaps I will try another provider and hope for a better service. After no response from EE we contacted them again last night and they say that Openreach have checked the line and said that there is no issue. So perhaps you are right, and EE is the problem.

    Thanks again,
    Dizzy
  • Just remember that if you only joined EE about a year ago, you could still be within the minimum contract term and if you leave for another provider, you might have to pay EE for any remaining months in your contract.
