Experian Password

I am registered for Experian Credit Matcher and the Experian ID Service that is an accredited partner for the Government Verify service. I had assumed that these were completely separate services but it appears not.

I had changed my passwords on both following the Equifax debacle to increase their strength and also because they had previously been the same.

However the next time I tried to enter Credit Matcher my new password was not recognised. After various tests and password resetting I now find that if I change my password on one it automatically changes on the other.

Curiously though, the supplementary login memorable word still remains separate for the two services. In addition if I am logged in to one and try the other I am taken to the third security level of MPIN or mobile code. It is all very confusing and I wondered if anyone else had experienced this.

I do not think that this represents a security issue but I am still concerned about Experian's systems

I don't think anyone here pays for Experian's service, not when you can get it for free:

I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly, and I can move and merge threads there. Any views are mine and not the official line of moneysavingexpert.com
  • Don’t think you pay for either of those.

Shakin Steve is correct (thanks), Experian Credit Matcher is free although not particularly useful. The Experian ID Service is also free although I expect they receive some sort of remuneration from HM Govt.

My apologies, I thought they were part of Experian's CreditExpert paid add-ons.

Can I ask, what is the point of using Experian Credit Matcher over other free comparison websites that don't require you to log in or have an account with them before you can see results?

    Eg:

And the Experian ID Service? Both seem rather redundant to me.

As far as I know, the Experian ID service is a way to verify your identity so that you can access government services. I have a government gateway ID so, when I want a state pension forecast or something similar, I can log in to that and follow the links. Experian is one of the companies that the government now uses to verify someone’s identity. When you try to access a dot gov website for the first time, you are given a choice of ‘trusted’ companies to do the checks. They will ask you everything from your passport number to the colour of your underwear and, when they are satisfied, will tell dot gov that your are, indeed, who you say you are. Just another way of big bro finding out everything about you.
Experian Credit matcher is free access to your credit report with ‘matches’ to various loans and credit cards that they think you may qualify for. In other words, credit brokering. It’s pretty much the same as the report you get with MSE...Experian lite kind of thing.

    Thank you for your reply.

At the time I registered for Credit Matcher I had thought that it would be more informative. The only reason I logged in recently was to make my password more secure in the light of recent cyber breaches across several sites.

I have been registered for the MSE credit club since it started providing the full Experian credit report so you are preaching to the converted here.

The Gov.UK website is advocating Govt Verify as the eventual replacement for the Government Gateway site as it is designed to be much more efficient and secure.

This thread is mainly to let people know about my experience with the password crossover issue and also to see if others have had any experience of this.

    Thanks for your reply.

Govt Verify via Experian is much easier to acces than Govt Gateway although I can access my data with either.

Sadly, Credit Matcher is Experian Extremely Light as it does not give you your report only your score and eligibility results for credit products. So quite useless really.

However, once registered I see no point in de-registering as they still have all of your data.
