Tui Cruises Single Supplements

Options
Hi All,

I'm a solo traveller well used to paying small single supplements at hotel when I have booked a double room. However this year I wanted to try a cruise for the first time. Booked a TUI cruise on the Discovery 2. An All Inclusive cruise and booked a single cabin...cost £2150. I then discovered to my horror that for a couple or two sharing the exact same cruise cost £3000 for two people. I was therefore being asked to pay over £600 as a single supplement. OK I understand that if I had booked a double room and the cruise was not all inclusive that TUI would be losing out, but am at a total loss to understand such an outrageously high single supplement for an all inclusive cruise in a single cabin. I cancelled the cruise in disgust and TUI basically did not want to know in terms of a logical explanation

Just like hotels cruise lines try it on.... and generally win
mark up can be from 75% - 100%

You might look at Cruise & Maritime who frequently have BOGOF for couples and half price for singles.
There's a promo on at present for certain cruises.

Ask one of the large cruise specialist agents. Try Ocean World or Readers Offers (ROL)

  • You booked a full room on the ship, nobody else is going to the the other half so why should the cruise company take a hit because you’ve chosen to have a room to yourself?

The incremental cost of a single passenger on a cruise ship is going to be pretty low, nowhere near £850, so you could view it as a pretty decent discount on the room.

  • I booked a single cabin so there is no "other half of the cabin"

I expect that there a very limited number of single berth cabins on the ship so to a certain degree the price charged will be a simple supply and demand equation. The Operator will charge (and are free to do so) what ever price they think they can for the single cabin.

I think it a shame that you cancelled your cruise to make a protest on the supplement. TUI won't care and I expect they will resell the cabin anyway.
  • Sometimes its not about the money but the principle of how such a large company could not cater for single travelers.
It seems in this dog eat dog world now its all about getting as much money and forgetting what matters most the customers.
Tui has changed so much over the years and the future is booking you own hoildays cutting out the middle men.

It does look like the cabin you had previously booked enjoys exactly the same floor space as a twin room.

Therefore I don't think your frustration is particularly justified.

  • I don't think it's a single supplement, just the price of a single cabin. Probably in short supply and possibly high demand, hence the seemingly more expensive 'per person' price.

Don't you mean " That will teach them"

Anyway I didn't cancel to teach them a lesson or as a protest. I cancelled because I did not feel comfortable for being ripped off with a £600 single supplement. The thought of sitting at the bar next to another person on the same cruise who has paid that amount less than me really did not make me smile.

I will spend my hard earned money elsewhere until they sort the practice out.
