OMG!! ok.. its had been a while.. but here goes. Unfortunately, my mum passed away end of February. I spent 6 months nursing her at home and we had lovely moments. Pushed the electricity problems out of my mind and relished the time I had with mum.
In the preceding year, we changed mums (ECO) heaters and installed LPG gas heating. No heaters in the house anymore. Did our electricity go down.. nope.
So following all the suggestions, we carried them all out.. no joy. Got hold of OFGEM who really are a bit useless, as all they did is came out to check the meter. Arrived with SSE engineer, did all there testing, installed a new meter, then told us that there was nothing wrong with the old meter, that we were in fact using that amount of electricity!!
We now live in one room, with LED lights, gas heating when needed a TV and the laptop. We rarely cook now and tend to eat salads, thank heavens for the warm weather.
We have a SMART type meter connected to our wires, which we put in, to watch the electric and when we put things on. Remember all our white goods are now new, we had the kitchen rewired completely in February last year when we had a new kitchen put in, as it was the only place we could think of that uses electricity most.
We no longer use the rest of the house and live in my mums annexe. Everything else is off in the house except the freezer.
We contacted the power company and they gave us a print out which shows we peak between 10am and 2pm. We have no idea what that is as we do nothing different in between those times, in fact most of the time we are out.
Just received another electric bill this morning. From January until March, we owed them £2592.94. I was up to date in December as I paid off £4k. Our bill from March 2019 until 4th June, we owe another £1093.72. So in total since December we've used £3,335.66.
We have turned off all our appliances, no reading on the meter, had electricians who cannot find any problem with our appliances or wiring, we have turned off at the mains, no meter problems.
We have noticed on our smart meter, than it can go up and down almost like a heart beat at times, when nothing is being turned on and off. It mostly sits in the green, but jumps to the orange most of the time when we put nothing on different.
We've listened to see it the freezer is powering up, but no. Although those that come around to check things for us, cannot believe our bills, no one can work it out.
We've had suggestions that since next door had power put into their farm, that the transformer cannot cope and our electricity pulls in more to run the same equipment. Is that even possible?
We've had the earth to the bungalow changed, just in case it wasn't earthing out properly. We cannot keep paying this ridiculous amount of money for electricity! We cannot afford alternative energy, it cost too much to put in. Wind power would be perfect here. We are on our own and only have a small farm around us. No houses. Our house apparently is the wrong way around for solar, although that's not cheap anymore.
There must be someone who is a wizz at this problem. If you know where he/she is, then please let us know.
Our estimated usage per annum they are quoting is 24,183.65kWh. They also say we have used more electricity this period than in the same period last year.. up by 61%!!!! if I don't keel over in shock soon, watch this space.
So my question is.. is there.. seriously, is there anyone that may be able to advise, suggest more than above. And thank you all for that.. we are after all only a three bedroomed bungalow, now sadly only two rooms being used. Only three of us live here now and as our bills continue to climb, it was nothing to do with my darling mum moving in.
Im at a loss and almost defeated!0 -
Very so to hear about your Mom.
I haven't gone back through the thread but you talk in terms of money - it was probably asked before but could you give us meter readings fro March and June please and include the letters A, C or E.
Ignore the prediction of 24000kwh - what matters is actual consumption.
PS Can you you use paragraphs please - the block of text is not inviting.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Further to reading back up the posts, I will just explain our set up..
we are a 3 bed bungalow surrounded by trees, no neighbours. We have a transformer in our field and another electricity pole in our garden. (Thank you for the suggestion of the paying of a wayleave.)
We have now been paid and have done a 7 year deal. We paid the electricity off with that!
The land next door is a small holding of no more than 13 acres. It surrounds us completely. They do have barns and electricity is used during the day. They have now converted this into a care farm, hence the electricity connection.
The transformer sits about 300ft if not more away from where our meter is, which is located inside the far end of the bungalow, the furthest away from the transformer.
From the transformer, our electric wires, run across the front of our land and then approach the back far end of the house by coming through across our driveway.
The extra telegraph pole runs elsewhere, I have no idea where, but that is the three wire type. Our electricity wires are still overhead. Although some of the village have been put underground, its not cost effective for the company to do the same for us, as we are on our own. (we are a nice little money earner for them)0 -
Apologies Robin9. The block text, is just me getting so intense when typing, as this is beyond stressful.
Meter readings.
Day units last time 27410 reading this time 30710
Night units last time 34646 reading this time 38252
apologies again0 -
our bill is broken into two. 1st March 2019 to 31st March 2019
Day energy 1426 kWh
night energy 461 kWh
1st April to 31st May
Day energy 1874 kWh
night energy 3145 kWh
of course we have a standing charge. Total this bill £1093.720 -
and these are ACTUAL not ESTIMATED. Taken by you ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
-
Actual, they send someone to read the meter, due to the problems we have had.0
-
Going by the meter you yourself had installed, you know the reading spikes at certain times then returns to normal.
This suggests that something is switching on and drawing power when the spike shows - have you investigated what that something could be, for example underfloor heating?
If it's nothing in your premises, have you investigated the buildings nearby and listened for something firing up at the times the spikes happen and turns off when the reading returns to normal?
How many cables/wires are there connected to the meter, both supply into and supply out to your fusebox?0 -
Do you have an in home display with the meter? If so, I would be monitoring the kWh readout and then switch off circuits in the fuse box one by one, looking to see when the consumption drops. By the time all the circuits are off, consumption should be at zero. If it's not, something is connected between the meter and the fuse box.
If you don't have an in home display, get a Geo Minim+. This should be simple to solve!0
