Parked in Hospital Disabled Bay

  • I often park in Ikea's blue-badge only bays, simply 'cos there's tons of 'em and when I go, they are mostly empty. I hasten to add that when I roll up and the blue-badge bays are busy, I'll take myself off to a regular parking spot.

Despite being in a wheelchair and actually needing a disabled space, I rarely get one when I go to the hospital. My other half just blocks the whole car park while she helps me into my wheelchair before going into a normal space.

I really think they need spaces for people who can't walk far (or wheelchairs to borrow in the car park like trolleys) and have separate bays for wheelchair users who need the extra space. How you would enforce something like that, I have no idea.

From all replies i seem to have committed the offence.of parking in a disabled bay without blue badge.
I do understand that ignorance is not an excuse, but none of us knew that you don't need to be a driver to obtain one BB.
However t i feel our circumstances were not to abuse intentionally but based on no space available, no parking bays despite arriving early enough. It takes me every time nearly an hour to find a suitable bay which offers the necessary space if not a disabled parking bay. I have the choice to cancel an appointment or call the ambulance services and let them deal with the issues as my mother was always unwilling to apply for a BB as she believes others needs it more (??? she is 80yrs old and in wheelchair) . My friend shares similar views. And i may not apply for something i don't think i need, as i am still able to walk.
Fact is i cant keep paying fines simply based on my mum asking for a spacious bay, their aren't any every single time we arrive driving around for nearly one hour. I really don't have any option: Pay the fine, and be less of an idiot .....Next time the NHS should pick up the bill not me as i will have to use the ambulance services. Thanks

I had a friend who used to do that. Ironically they are now in a wheelchair and struggle to get an accessible parking space at Ikea. Turns out what goes around, comes around.

The question is, why are you so special? Everyone who has ever used a hospital car park struggles to get a space unless it is early morning or late night. Or you are incredibly lucky. The amount you are paying in fines, surely it would be cheaper to get a taxi? Even if you park nearby and get a taxi the rest of the way.

I'll reiterate Mrcol's question, why are you special?

Those of us who have followed the procedure - that you're clearly aware of because you offer two excuses why you haven't followed it - been assessed for a blue badge, met the criteria and need to similarly attend appointments, or indeed work, and need to park in an accessible space, struggle to do so for all of the reasons that you do, and also because the small number of accessible spaces are taken by people parking in them that are not entitled to do so.

None of what you've said mitigates the fact that you've broken the contract of the carpark

You say you and your mother don't need a blue badge but object to being penalised for using a disabled parking bay. You either need one or you don't, You can't have it both ways.

If you don't think you need a badge then don't use a disabled space.

There is no reason why , if your mother qualifies, she can't have a badge but only use it when there is n other suitable space.

Without a Blue badge i'm guessing. People like you make me so angry! You don't have a blue badge, therefore you have no right to park there.

The gym that I go to always has a line of Mercedes & BMWs in the disabled parking spaces next to the door. You see the meatheads arriving and running in the gym. The last time I went there was a young woman parking in a disabled space. I recognised her because she always spends hours on the treadmill. Why would you park in a disabled space right next to the door and then run for hours on a treadmill? Crazy. The gym is part of a hotel by the way.
