Here's the list so far of what I intend to make once we're settled and the land is properly managed again - Crab apple sauce, green fig jam, pickled samphire, crab apple jelly, elderflower preserve, spiced medlar chutney, quince jelly/cheese, medlar cheese, wild garlic pesto (yum at the thought!), sloe gin butter, hedgerow preserve, red onion marmalade, damson cheese, raspberry lemongrass vodka, damson gin, ginger and honey liqueur, plum and cardamom liqueur, raspberry and rose liqueur, rhubarb vodka, cider and sage mustard, spicy fig and plum chutney, olive/herb/lemon zest sourdough. Not only will we have yummy things to eat and drink, we'll also give stuff away for birthdays and Christmas presents. My mother-in-law always gives us a basket of homemade james and chutneys, so we'll be able to return the favour.

Our orchard has 30 types of heirloom apples, plus pears, quince, damsons, greengages, plums, hazel and figs. My spreadsheet is getting more and more detailed, and my back is already groaning at the thought!

Still figuring out what to grow in the soft fruit cage that we're going to put in: I guess the usual currants and berries (blueberries in a pot with ericaceous compost), plus a Buckingham tayberry to go along the edge of the plot. Lots of veg stuff in the polytunnel and heated greenhouse - might try melons and a small lime tree.

DH is planning a hawthorn hedge and I'll have a rose garden; apple and rosehip preserve is really lovely. Lots of rhubarb. Might put in some more nut trees - we lose the hazels in our current place every year to the squirrels. Haven't really scoped out what trees we have so far, but we'll definitely ditch the pampas grass in the middle of the formal lawn. It'll be our little Eden :) I've dreamed of doing this for 30 years, and feel blessed that we're in a position to go for it.

Our outbuilding will be our craft centre as it has an attached kitchen - I love the idea of making my own cheese with vegetarian rennet although we'd have to buy in the milk. Lots of farms around us so I'm sure we can come to some kind of agreement. There's a smokery on-site as well as the current kept pigs, but as I'm veggie, not sure how much that will get used. It's just a shame I'll have to work to afford all of this! I always wanted to live like a medieval peasant instead of doing the corporate City stuff.

    Afternoon all,

Got builders here bricking up an unused doorway from the kitchen into the carport so its very noisy and very dusty ! but I am so glad its being done, its the first stage of the kitchen refit which should be happening at the end of November.

I have hovered and cleaned through upstairs and shut all the doors but not a lot of point doing downstairs till the workmen have finished.

I have done two loads of washing and dd has just put another load on, its either on the airers or in the td as its pouring with rain here.

DD and her young man have made a lasagne and salad which we are just about to have for lunch, will give the builder some too. Tonight we will just have a sandwich or cheese and crackers.

Dumpling hope Becky is ok when you see her.

    Have good days all xx
  • Afternoon folks. Despite blue sky and sunshine tis very cold out there and I was glad to get back home from town at lunchtime. Welcome TIGLATH - you sound to have a busy life in store for you when you move.

I think everyone has the same idea re shopping early for Xmas. I can't believe how busy it was round the cards, wrapping paper, gift bags etc. I too need to get out all the presents already bought and check off against my long list. Not many people left to buy for now I don't think. But my list has grown by 3! I forgot I intend buying a bit of something for DS's GF's children! My list now stands at 30 people!

And talking of DS's GF - she rang me this morning to thank me for her birthday present They were going to Gino D'Acampo's new(ish) restaurant in Leeds last night with another birthday couple. Gino was actually at the restaurant and was having a word with all the customers. They had a few photographs taken with him. She said he was absolutely lovely and it made their evening more special. I am envious! (And she said the food was good too!)

Off now to get the Carrot & Orange soup on the go but would prefer to keep sitting by the fire with my feet up!

I hope DUMPLING is having some big cuddles with Becky and they have a lovely afternoon together. LAMEWOLF I am lucky Mr TA just accepts food shopping is a needs must job and mogs along with the trolley behind me. Quite often a good way behind me as he always seems to spot someone he knows and makes time for a chat! I just want the job over and done with so I can get home to put it all away.

NANNYWINDOW I know a little bit of what you fancy does you good but does that also apply to half of a big box in one evening!! Oh CSARINA poor you, but surely if the shed people are at fault they should help?

Enjoy the rest of the day folks if you can. I am already counting down to Strictly time! Take care and keep warm xx

    Good afternoon everyone
Just had a catch up as time seems to have disappeared this week . My dad was taken into hospital on Tuesday night.....he had a dangerously low level of haemoglobin in his body. He had blood and iron transfusions and was allowed home again last night, though he has to go as a day patient for more tests. It has been such a worry and I feel as if I've hardly slept all week, as, with his dementia, we were worried that he would be scared and wouldn't know where he was. He managed well and everyone was very kind and patient with him but he's pleased to be back home. It's going to take him a few days at least to recover from the whole experience, which wasn't helped by the fact that it was a one and a half hour journey to and from the hospital. You can all imagine how worried my mam has been.....they've been married for 57 years. Hopefully as he said this morning 'I might last a bit longer'!
So I'm having a nice quiet afternoon after visiting for a few hours this morning. The bathrooms are clean, washing and ironing done and downstairs hovered. I will probably hoover upstairs while my tea is cooking later.
Now I'm going to have a read of our local paper, though theres never a lot in it!

    Hello to Tiglath :hello:
    Dp1

  • Lame wolf, I hate shopping with a passion whether it be for food clothes or anything, I particularly hate wandering around B&Q whilst hubby gets his fix of tool !!!!!!.
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • Evening all, home from work and I have Monday off as worked today.
Hello tiglath and welcome. My tablet wanted to greet you as hello tights but I have beaten it into submission.
I'm not eating tonight as still stuffed from conference food at v posh hotel but OH has cooked and they are having spicy sausages, tacos with salad, chicken satay and something else that I can't see from here and am too cream crackered to get up and investigate.
Cleaned the bathroom and sitting room and the hall yesterday but now it all looks as if it has been invaded by a horde of large and clumsy bears so I do wonder why I bother, oh well.
I am a yawn on legs now, waiting for the time when it will be reasonable to go to bed.
Hope you have all had as good a day as possible and especially Dumpling with your darling Becky.

Lame Wolf, my OH does the shopping, he likes it, I don't. I just pop in to the shops on the way home from work if we are running out of fresh veg or fruit.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

    Evening all,

LW........swop choices as someone said......bloody men and their ideas!

Dumpling......hope that you had a lovely visit with Becky.

JackieO.......glad that Shelly is more mobile, Frank is waiting for something, he will go in his time.

Csarina....hope that you get shed sorted soon.

We have had a quiet house this weekend, all daughters are gone to Galway for DD3s hen weekend, no doubt they will be back feeling sorry for themselves sometime tomorrow afternoon, just have DGDs 1&3 and they are happiest doing their own thing, so very little trouble, just need feeding now and then.

My brother is 64 today and DS1 is 46......I have twins for 6 weeks until DD1is 47.

It has been a miserable misty, dark day here, although not cold....all 5 clothes airers are laden with washing in various stages of dampness.

OH is watching a soccer match between Ireland and Denmark.....find it very boring so will retire to the kitchen to faff around.

    Welcome Tiglath.

Have a good weekend everybody, hugs to all who could use one.
