    I doubt you will find anyone wants them, there are dozens of working “old” laptops for virtually nothing

    Take them to the local council recycling centre and move on.


    As an alternative to chucking them away - if there's a college or suchlike nearby, they might be glad of them if they run any courses that teach computer repairs. I know my local college will always take them for teaching and allowing the students to practise their repair skills on. I realise this doesn't really address the OP's question about being able to get something for them, and the usual caveat about securely removing your private data still applies ... but it's better than them going to landfill :)

    No need to take a 'lump hammer' to the hard drives. Just take them out and keep them, perhaps for backups.
