Run a diesel engine on nothing but supermarket fuel for years is not good for fuel injectors compared to branded fuel

Rubbish. I've done literally hundreds of thousands of miles (approaching at least half a million) over the last 10-15 years and have never used anything but supermarket diesel unless in an emergency. Not one of any of the many diesel or petrol vehicles I've owned, personal, company, new or old, has ever had any problems with injectors, EGRs, DPFs, turbos, fuel pumps or anything related to them.

I also work with refineries, storage and distribution terminals, and fuel suppliers, and so I know exactly how the systems work.

There is absolutely nothing wrong or risky about using supermarket fuel.

Where are all the thousands of people with complaints about supermarket fuel, if it was as bad as you say there would be vehicles breaking down everywhere.

No there isn't. If there was then France would be littered with broken down cars given that the vast majority of fuel there is purchased from the likes of Carrefour, InterMarche, Brico Marche, Super U and the like.

So would the UK given how full the local Morrisons and Tesco petrol stations are compared to the local Esso.

My last Mondeo I sold on 165,000 on original injectors and turbo and with very few exceptions it was Tesco/Asda/some of the French ones above. In 17/18000 miles a year it would get the odd tank of BP if I was low on fuel when I left work at 4am but maybe three or four tanks a year.

My current Mondep is on 125k on the original injectors. 87k of that has been as above and again no issues as found using the CYLx_RATIO function in Forscan and when you boot it there is no black smoke out the exhaust which there would be with worn injectors that would put too much fuel into the engine.

But ultimately you're not going to believe me so here is the Millbrook Test Report into Tesco Momentum which also tested injector and valve carbon deposits.

    https://d16vpkeamxept2.cloudfront.net/assets/6ca06d648b9541e78fa838fece4a1a23.pdf

    From the report:
Four different fuels were tested in this programme: a competitor’s forecourt standard
    95RON gasoline (Fuel A), Tesco’s forecourt standard 95RON gasoline (Fuel B),
    Tesco’s “Momentum 99” premium 99RON gasoline (Fuel C) and a competitor’s
premium 99RON gasoline (Fuel D). Before exhaust emissions testing took place on
the vehicles, they were first conditioned to each fuel, which involved a fuel and oil
flush procedure before running 1000 miles of mileage accumulation on Millbrook’s
    tracks.

The results from these borescope inspections are as follows:
Following the Fuel A emissions testing, the Fiesta and the Panda showed a
slight increase in inlet valve deposits. The 207 and the Scenic showed no
change in condition of inlet valves compared with the start of test results.

Following the Fuel B emissions testing, the Fiesta and the Panda showed a
slight decrease in inlet valve deposits. The 207 showed no change in either
inlet valve or injector deposits and the Scenic showed an increase in both
inlet valve and injector deposits compared with Fuel A results.

Following the Fuel C emissions testing, the Scenic showed a slight decrease
in inlet valve deposits. The other three vehicles showed slightly more fouled
results, with the Fiesta and Panda showing an increase in inlet valve deposits
and the 207 showing an increase in injector deposits compared with Fuel B
    results.

Following the Fuel D emissions testing, the Fiesta, Panda and Scenic
showed a decrease in inlet valve deposits with no change in the condition of
the injectors. The 207 showed no change in the condition of the valves but a
decrease in injector deposits compared with Fuel C results.
Oh dear, is that right? Surely not because you've said it couldn't be....

The more fundamental error here is to forget that nowadays the supermarkets are the big brands. According to 2016 data, about 90% of UK fuel sales are made up of 8 suppliers, 4 of which are supermarkets. Tesco/Morrison/Sainsbury/Asda have a total of about 46% of the UK sales, while Shell/Esso/BP/Texaco have about 44%.

Why are you persisting with banging on about diesel - the O/P drives a petrol and we're talking about petrol cars?

    You get that right?

Why are we letting gardner1 derail a thread, talking about something thats not relevant as the O/P drives a petrol?

    Hi,

I have a 55 plate Corsa C SXi (petrol) and would like to purchase some engine/fuel system cleaner. I haven't done for a few years and want to see if it helps with the occasional starting issues, particularly as I let my petrol light start flashing before I filled up last time and so there may have been some deposits that have worked their way into my system.

I previously used redex but have also seen that you can get a couple of products by Wynns - an injection cleaner and a petrol system cleaner.

I would imagine they're all pretty much the same but would like to get any recommendations on which to buy.

Also, I tend to fill up at Sainsburys and wondered if people would recommend using a non-supermarket station and also purchasing the better quality fuels like premium unleaded?

My car has done about 107k miles so if I can help to look after the engine in a small way then I would like to.

    Thanks.

    I personally use Millers additives

That improvement is in your head. Can guarantee that if you put it on a rolling road it quite simply wouldn't exist.
