A bit of research

Hi all,

I wanted to get some opinions on something. How long should a new television last before anything serious goes wrong with it?(not including the remote breaking). We all hear about people who buy televisions that go on and on and on. But I wanted to get a feel for how long people think a television should last at a minimum. I am making a few assumptions when asking this question. The television is one of the top brands Sony, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Panasonic etc. It is kept in a standard environment i.e. not subjected to temperature extremes. It is kept clean and not knocked about. Standard usage of about 2-3 hours a day. Let me know your thoughts.

2-3hrs a day should easily last at least five years. Even a cheap budget one from Argos should last five years at 15hrs a week usage (I've had my cheap budget one since 2010 and it's often used for well over six hours a day, sometimes 36hrs straight (if I fall asleep in front of it :)). My grandmother's old-school CRT one is easily 25 years old at least and still going strong after average daily use of about 3hrs.

Good god man!! How long do you sleep for?
    Dwy galon, un dyhead,
    Dwy dafod ond un iaith,
    Dwy raff yn cydio’n ddolen,
    Dau enaid ond un taith.
  • I would expect any tv to last at least 5 years with average use (4 hours daily)

Even longer if its the old school CRT screens
  • If its an inherent fault wouldn't there be lots of them be failing ?
in which case there should be evidence on the web of other with same complaint

Nope not that one, this is more of a general question about peoples expectations.

Being an old person I expect everything to last at least 10 years. TV, car, domestic appliances, furniture, marriage, etc. I'm rarely disappointed.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Minimum 5 years - and that's why I normally get from John Lewis/Somewhere else with a decent warrantee.

Both my last TVs died after 2 years, and both got fixed and are still working years afterwards.

Why don't you just tell us what issues you're having!

Just trying to see if my expectations of durability are in line with other peoples or am I expecting too much. I personally would have thought for a "top" brand 3-4 years would be the absolute minimum.
