Weird Tesco Bank 'thing'

My postie brought me a padded envelope with my details handwritten though in a strange format.

The only (no letter or comps slip etc) item in the envelope is a CD with the following printed on the front of it:

Letter
Tesco Bank

then my surname (well part of it)
then a number (no relation to any bank account number)

Of course, I haven't put this CD into my laptop and do not intend to do that. I phoned Tesco Bank and spoke to a customer service agent who was baffled by this.

Has anyone else had this? Is this a new type of 'let's load a virus onto a laptop' thing?

I'll probably post this on the IT board too, just wanted to know if anyone else has had this.

I haven't had anything. Last I had from them was about the withdrawal of the DD facility and just before that, new Ts and Cs with amended wordings and notification of a change of their head office.

Worse than a virus, it could be something designed to capture your details and send them to the fraudsters. Tesco Bank never send anything without a covering letter and referencing part of your account number(s).

I would also be minded to report it to phishing@tescobank.com . This is the address they tend to give out on Twitter when someone reports receiving something dodgy.

Nope not had that Gers, weird though.

I maybe wrong on this but for something to happen you would have to click on the .exe file so even poping it into the machine wont do any harm.

I have been a Tesco Bank customer for a few years now - never had anything like that from them. I would say it's a certain scam. You have done the right thing not to load that CD. I would report it to ActionFraud.

errm - - it could be on autoplay. I'd only peek at it in a sandboxed environment if I wanted to touch it at all - which I wouldn't.
  • You did the right thing in not putting it on to your computer. I have never heard of a bank doing that.

Absolutely agree. the days when you actually had to double-click an exe are long gone. If I was really desperate to see what was on there I might be tempted to take it to my local library and have a look on one of their machines (assuming there wasn't a 'safe' machine available to use at home)

I did wonder if it was a mis-directed CD containing all the details of customers with £1 DD's they intend to cancel ;)

  • Agree with the above posters. Even if it doesn't autoplay, by not putting it into your computer in the first place you are two steps away from loading a virus or malware onto it. You want to keep it that way.

Most banks offer the option of audio statements for those with sight problems.

Is it possible that you've somehow ended up with one of these? Would explain the lack of cover note.

Having never had one of these myself I don't know what format they are in. However I wonder if you put it in a CD player whether this would solve the mystery?

The only other thing I can think of might be an electronic copy of your details after a SAR (Subject Access Request) - but in that case you'd be expecting it and there would probably be a cover letter.

Although autoplay is disabled by default on any modern PC, it obviously still makes sense to leave the CD out of a computer as there are many ways to trick anyone who isn't an expert user.

However I'm suggesting a CD player that you'd use for music! If it isn't an audio CD, then it simply won't play.

No, no SAR or any recent contact with Tesco Bank. I got the T&C changes leaflet.

As I said the handwritten envelope has my details correct but in a strange order.

    Name
    House name
    Village
    County
    Town
    Postcode

No letter, no Tesco branding, the number on the CD is not connected to anything registered for me with Tesco. I don’t have a club card and hardly ever shop in Tesco.

Haven’t got a CD player anymore. I’m going to post it to a very techie relative who can load it on a blank laptop to check it out.

I’ll post an image of the CD in a wee while.
