Small town, surrounded by fields in one direction and seaside in the other:

    Built on 29%
    Green urban 9%
    Farmland 41%
    Natural 20%
  • Built on 47%
    Green urban 22%
    Farmland 25%
    Natural 6%

It covers a big and diverse area though, right from the heart of the city centre out to the edge of the suburbs where actual countryside begins. Where I used to live in the more urban bit would have been 95% or more built up, while the outer bit I'm in now is much greener.

    Mine is:

    Built on 23%
    Green urban 13%
    Farmland 34%
    Natural 29%

Which I'm surprised about as I thought the Built On figure would be higher

    Where I'm originally from:

    Built on 65%
    Green urban 17%
    Farmland 18%
    Natural 0%

Home area 50% built on and 7% natural.

Current area 1% built on, 33% natural.

I think the relative ratios is what matters and whether the ratio has changed for the worse since one started living there. That website could do with a "history" feature to check out how it used to be at various years in the past. I've watched films before now that show coloured dots for human population spread across the centuries - gone from barely visible to noticeable etc and then "going like wildfire" for the last century or so and still being a "wildfire" and we need something detailed like that for local areas.

Also not mentioned is the growth rate.

What I was finding with my home area is that building was going at a rate of knots and green urban areas were being built on - and lots more people (and their cars) trying to use the area. It had gone from "about right" to "Agh! It's too much!"

There's also our own personal ratios of what we feel comfortable with and I'd hazard a guess that my own personal ratio would probably be set at around 30% built on, a lot more green urban space and a decent amount of natural space. Personally - I'm not bothered about what level of farmland is around me personally (it could be loads or pretty much non-existent) - as long as the country as a whole has plenty of farmland (as I'd like us to be able to be more self-sufficient for food).

I’m actually shocked at how much is built on here, it’s considered quite a rural area (Welsh Valleys), also surprised at how little farmland there is considering it’s still a farming community. I’m very happy with the above average natural areas though, that’s what make this place home.

Also when entering my postcode it bought up areas that are not on my doorstep so not sure how its a true reflection of exactly where I live.
It uses the postcode to identify your local authority area, and then gives the overall figure for that local authority.

    Here, that's county level. 2,000+ km2, 190,000 people.

    (FWIW - 2%, 1%, 88%, 9%)

Not unexpected for London-On-Sea, but still, I'm looking forward to the day when I will stop being so dependent on the links here and be able to move to somewhere a bit further out. Maybe in the next 5-10 years if things go okay.

edge of greater manchester. Very diverse borough. Most of the green stuff is on the eastern edge. There is currently much unrest about plans to develop the green belt. Some of it is very poorly drained & unsuitable for housing without massive drainage work & also contains at least 3 reservoirs that I am aware of. (do you think that will stop them?) The "Natural" land is moorland or too hilly for development.
I fear the day is coming when there will be a solid swathe of built environment from the very edges of the Pennines right across to Liverpool.
  • Built on - 49%

    Green urban - 20%

    Farmland - 30%

    Natural - < 1%

I hail from leafy Altrincham - though this is skewed by Trafford Park and Old Trafford.
