More than likely this offer by British Gas doesn't include pay as you go metered customers who have been discriminated against all along and have had to pay more for their gas and pay for it straight away, not fair to say the least, we are on the like it or lump it tariff but no one is listening Martin!

You can always ask to become a DD customer and get a credit meter. They take the money straight of your bank account, cheap, easy simple especially if it's all done on line.
It cost more to bill customers and to process cheque or cash payments so they pay a bit more.
However PayGo costs the suppliers even more more to collect the money as they've got to supply keys and pay a commission to their agents.
So it's not unreasonable to give a discount to those who are easiest & cheapest to deal with.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Your statement is not correct.
All of the companies gave evidence to the Parliamentary Energy committee that the additional administration costs of running Pay As You Go(PAYG) tariffs were not covered their charges.
As PAYG are largely used by the less well off, the companies were forced by the Government(read Hansard) to further lower their charges for PAYG). These costs are covered by a cross-subsidy paid for by normal credit meter customers.
Many(NOT all) PAYG customers have their meters compulsorily fitted(at the company's expense) because the customer has defaulted on a credit tariff.
Far from a 'like it or lump it tariff' most companies are willing to fit a credit meter if they have the confidence the customer will pay on time.0
