I was with my uncle at the weekend and he wants to use his wifes old mobile (she died this year) but the original orange sim says it is invalid or broken. He thinks there may be credit on it. I have 2 questions
1) Can we retrieve the credit even though the sim is broken or damaged?
2) I looked at new EE sims and they want you to pay £15 a month for a bundle. My uncle just wants to have an old fashioned phone with credit for emergencies. Can we get him an EE sim or what is the alternative?

If the phone will take Three thier PAYG sim does not expire so just put £10 on it and it will last.0

It will be difficult to retrieve the old credit but if you have full details of the account including their 4 digit pass code it may be possible.
You do not need to buy a bundle, you can just have old fashioned PAYG credit if you wish but EE make very little mention of that.
There are many other cheaper providers out there but it all depends on if the phone is locked to Orange / EE. If you have another provider SIM put it in and see what happens.0 -
It sounds more likely that the SIM has expired after a certain period of non-use, perhaps six months in the case of Orange PAYG, in which case any credit is gone. If the SIM is faulty but not expired it will be hard to reclaim the credit without registered user's credentials.
2) EE want you to buy a bundle but it's not necessary, a free SIM can be ordered online (I think) and topped up. But there are much cheaper networks, such as Asda, which runs on the EE network so should work with the handset even if it's locked to EE. Free PAYG SIM can be ordered online, as with most. The best would be Three PAYG but this will not work in an older phone that has no 3G capability.
Make sure he understands that any PAYG SIM will expire unless a chargeable call, sms or data use is made to extend the validity period, which varies with each network.Evolution, not revolution0 -
You are far better off getting a free Asda sim (order online)
It's guaranteed to work (if phone is locked) and prices are good at around 4p / 8p
I wouldn't bother trying to get credit back.
You can stop EE packs by texting "STOP PACK" to 150
IIRC.
But calls are still expensive at 40p/min?0
