  • The other half's Jazz from which is on a '02' plate is the only car I have driven without a temperature guage as one of the instruments.

On a side note I would be very wary of buying a 1.0 Mondeo, what is the resale value on a 100,000 mile example going to be?

The same as it is for any other Mondeo with 100k on.

My Vauxhall Astra twinport 54 plate does not have a temp gauge.

Where can I find reasonably in depth assessments of the pros and cons of different engines?

I am currently interested in a Ford B-max, petrol, and most of the reviews recommend the ecoboost engine. But looking at the cars available second hand, a fair proportion of people bought the conventional petrol engine. Presumably they had their reasons and I would like to know what they were likely to have been, in case they are good reasons for me too.

The version with the 1.4 petrol engine is cheaper to buy. The 1.4 engine has been used in various Ford cars since the early nineties, so any reliability problems should have been fixed by now. The Ecoboost engines still look a bit too good to be true, raising worries over reliability. That said, the old 1.4 engine probably has the same lack of low-speed torque that my 1.25 Fiesta suffers from (same engine family), so I would choose the Ecoboost for a heavier car like the B-Max.

Would be useful if cars still had temperature gauges.
Here's a thread on the B-Max temperature gauge http://www.bmaxownersclub.co.uk/forum/temp-gauge-on-instrument-display_topic1186.html - remember that's what the OP was looking at....

Depends on where those 100K were.... Lots of school runs versus lots of motorway thrashing? I can't quite see who would buy such a car- if you need the space for kids and bikes but wanted a smaller engine for town driving then a B-Max or C-Max seems a better bet.
I need to think of something new here...

    Nor my 59 reg Mazda2.
  • Nor my '14 Toyota Yaris. Just has high and low temp.warning lights.
I did buy and use a display that plugs into the obd port and shows coolant temp, battery volts and other selectable parameters. No, it's not a h.u.d. that shows on the windscreen but a little console that sticks to the top of the dash.
