MSE News: BT to hike prices in January - watch out for a letter

You are not in contract so presumably paying a higher price .
You use a web comparison site like MSE and compare what you want or just look at current BT offers .
Sign up with new ISP and they handle it all .
<Will I get any upfront line rental payments back?>.
But you say you are out of contract ??So would not be paying ALR .
If you get the price rise email/ letter then follow the instructions on the letter and tell them you are leaving due to the price rise . You do that to avoid owing the balance of the contract . But you say you are not in contract .
Really you need to find out what service and contract you are on now .Usual is sign up 12 months that finishes then you continue on a 30 day rolling expensive contract until you give 30 days notice .
I am going to assume that this is a reply to me, so thanks, just to clarify I am definitely out of contract and paying a higher price - but again - I stayed with BT because I cannot fault the BB.
The bit that I have highlighted - again yes, I am out of contract but I am billed monthly in advance, so when I switch I should get some back, no?
I have already received the e-mail about the increase, but as I am not in contract, I wasn't sure whether I need to contact them or not.
The last line is correct - I signed up for 12 months on a deal and just never switched when it ended for reasons given above.
Thanks again!0 -

Let me clear up this slight confusion...
I think some of the other posters thought upfront in this case was referring to a 1 yr/ALS/saver type deal and you, if I am correct, are referring to the 1 month that is generally billed in advance by most providers.
The answer anyway is yes... you'll get the unused portion of your line rental back on your final bill once you've left.0 -
I've had the price increase mail too. I have pretty much the lot with BT (line, broadband, TV, mobile, BT Sport) so can I cancel the lot or only the services that are subject to the price increase?0

Perfect, thank you!
So does that mean that I don't have to contact BT to tell them I'm leaving? I can just contact the new provider and start the switch and will still get any unused portion back?0 -

Yes contact as per your price increase email otherwise you will miss the get out of jail free clause . Just going through an ISP signup without contacting BT will not be a cancellation free of penalty .
Can you explain why please? I am not in contract so what penalty would there be?0 -

In CurlySue's case she's not in contract AIUI, so can just go ahead with the transfer; everyone else on this thread cancelling due to the price increase does need to contact BT before leaving.0 -
I've just had the price increase email and BT have given me the option to avoid the hike by renewing my contract.
As I'm currently on a haggled deal of £25.99 for infinity 1 this suits me well. I haggled to that deal well over a year ago and this is now the second time I've been able to renew it for 18 months so the price hike has worked out well for me.0 -
