New broadband/tv package without ugly thick cables everywhere

Hi

We are soon moving home and I currently have a Virgin media full package and wanted to take this with me. However, in my new home the living room is a the rear of the property ( 3 storey terraced townhouse). I absolutely loathe the ugly thick cable all over the skirting and doorways, but love the broadband and package itself. My current installation was over 10 years ago, is it still as bulky and ugly as it used to be? I don’t want it running all through my new house making it look awful again. Otherwise, sky is an option but it their setup the same? Thick cables everywhere? Is their broadband any good?
Don’t know what to do for the best. Any advice is appreciated .

Do VM supply your new property ?
  • Yes, they can do they said but they will need to dig at front of property first in order to install. X

There could be mess involved outside, depending on what surfaces you have.

We had one of Virgin's forerunners and they used an access hole on the flagged pavement, ran a line down our front border, raised a flagstone path slab, then drilled into the wall, so no visible damage, but other houses need to have hardstanding or paving dug up and it never looks tidy again.

Next door have just had Virgin installed and though they have the same line from pavement to house, they have messy wire running up the front of the house (over white cladding) to access upstairs.

We don't have Sky in multiple rooms ,but the dish (dish at rear) wiring runs high along the side wall then low under the front door and windows, then into the old cable box, so much neater.
  • VM are still using coax that is similar to an aerial lead, even if they call it "fibre" or "fibre optic". Unless you get some very obliging installers they are likely to take the path of least resistance when running the cable. At work I managed to get them to run it through the loft but I did the part in the loft, I had the install crew feed the cable up to me, I drew it though and fed it back down again into the room where we needed it.

Not that I'd personally use VM even if they paid me to have their service.

  • Thanks for the replies. My current house is a terraced house with no front garden, but my new property will have a small 1 meter gated garden . It’s no so much outside I’m worried about as there are shrubs on the tiny path, but more the cable running over skirting and door frames all the way to the living room in the back. Suppose sky would be similar ? I’ll just have to insist that it’s done very very neatly and stand over them whilst they work lol. I also think sky seems more expensive and don’t fancy losing all my email addresses with Virgin. Thanks for the input so far though, it’s much appreciated xxx

I understand you want to stay with Virgin but if the sky dish could be installed at the back of the house, the cable needed would be short enough to go directly into the TV room... you should be able to "guesstimate" ideal dish locations if you see where the neighbours dishes are pointing towards.

If for a minute we assume the internet only comes to the front of the property (or your BT master socket is is away from the TV room), then you could technically go "wireless" getting a wifi Now TV box, Roku, etc...
