Resolver's PPI Checker Service

First post.
I'm just embarking on the PPI reclaim journey without using a third party company.
Some of the credit cards (Capital One, Egg etc.) I cannot remember if I had PPI (although pretty sure there was), and do not have any paperwork anymore. So I've started using Resolver's PPI Checker form to contact these companies on my behalf (the free MSE service).
What have people's experiences been with PPI Checker, will the credit card companies/banks be open and honest, or just fob you off with a "we have no record of PPI" associated with any of the details you have provided, knowing full well you're not sure yourself?
This has been the response back from Capital One, and I'm loathed to submit any more PPI checker complaints if that's all that will happen.
I've submitted a PPI Checker request to HSBC for two Midland Bank loans that I know full well I had PPI on (in the 1990's), so will be interested to see what they feed back.
Thanks in advance.

They'll tell you if they have records.
They'll tell you they don't if they haven't.
Take the faster route though and avoid Resolver, going direct to the lender.0 -
Thanks ZX - are you saying to just call up the various lending company customer service numbers and ask them to check on your behalf?0
-
Yes - or write to them. Either works and cuts out the middleman slowing everything down.0

You state that you don't know whether you had any PPI and then think it somehow dishonest of the bank to confirm that you didn't?
The "service" you are using is just an E-Mail template and is no different to writing them a letter or making a telephone call to them.
You haven't made a "complaint", you've made an enquiry.
If their records show that you didn't have PPI (or your finance is so old the records have been deleted) then there is nothing more you can do.
You will only ever get a refund of money you actually paid.0 -
Thanks for the reply - I'm saying that because I know full well one or two of them got me onto PPI via a phone conversation, but have no records of it myself anymore. If you can expect an honest response, that's great, and all I wanted to check with other people before sending a load more off.0

As I said, if the Bank's records contradict your memory (or if the records have been deleted in line with data protection) there will be nothing you can do and any complaint you might make will be ended before it's begun.I'm saying that because I know full well one or two of them got me onto PPI
There is no reason to doubt any response you get from the Banks, but obviously only documentation from your own archive will counteract a negative response based on their having destroyed records due to the passage of time.
You should also consider on what basis you will complain if you get a positive response. It is not somehow wrong to have insurance and it will only be refunded to you if you can show it was mis-sold to you.0 -
I also used resolver to complain to Black Horse who had no record of my loan even though I provided the loan agreement number.
I then sent them a copy of the original loan agreement.
The reason I complained was we were not told that the ppi was in fact in the form of another loan which we would have to pay interest on.
Found out today that it's called single premium ppi.
However even though the loan agreement I sent clearly shows the ppi and the interest we would be paying over the term they replied saying I need to provide more evidence and have closed the complaint.
How much more evidence do I need to provide for them to re-open the complaint?0 -
Hi fredtred, Black Horse as you know is part of Lloyds Bank, who don't have the best record of treating its customers fairly. They were fined £117m in 2015 for failing to handle PPI complaints fairly. I suggest you put all your evidence together and submit a complaint. It appears that you may have loads of evidence to show that you had PPI. The question is, were you mis-sold the policy? It would depend on your circumstances at the time of the sale of the PPI policy, e.g. were you eligible to claim against the policy? or was the policy superfluous because you were already covered by an employers sick benefit scheme at the point of sale. If you were mis-sold the PPI policy, don't be fobbed off. If Black Horse ask you for unreasonable information, such as your P60s for the past 10 years, then tell them to issue you a Final Response Letter, then take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, if you don't agree with their response.0

Unfortunately, the Agreement is not proof that you paid any PPI. The loan, the PPI or both could have been cancelled during the "cooling off" period for all the bank knows. You'll need documentary proof of payment. How much more evidence do I need to provide for them to re-open the complaint?
You do have a robust and compelling mis-selling complaint, but you won't be refunded unless you can show you paid this PPI.
I sincerely doubt that their history of poor complaint handling has continued after being fined so heavily.Black Horse as you know is part of Lloyds Bank, who don't have the best record of treating its customers fairly. They were fined £117m in 2015 for failing to handle PPI complaints fairly.0 -
Is the fact that we were never told that we had to borrow the full cost of the ppi and pay interest on it mean we were mis-sold the ppi?0
