Nest heat link installed wrong?

Hi,

I've just had a work man here to do a few jobs, move gas pipes, install outdoor tap & fit the nest...

Everything went well apart from the Nest, & it appears he knew it so bailed before it could be proven to be working by myself.

Hot water works, can get the heating to kick in if forcing it, but the thermostat will not switch it.

So looking at it, he has the 240v feed coming from the mains into N/L of the heat link & then another wire from N/L of the heat link going to the N/L within the boiler.

He then has t1 & t2 going to RT within the boiler & two earth cables going to a connector he must have wedged in the heat link.

Looking at the install booklet wires should be in terminals 2 & 3 so I'm assuming his wiring is wrong?

I don't really want to me as with wiring as it's an unknown.

Can anyone help me out as this guy is no longer answering his phone..

The boiler is a heat line capriz 28c if this helps?

Thanks for ANY help

The Mrs & new born ain't impressed today

  • I wouldn’t bother getting the guy back because he hasn’t got a clue what he’s doing. I’m talking can’t even read the manual levels of incompetence.

T1 AND T2 are 12V ELV terminals and are used to provide power to the thermostat (you don’t need these if you’re powering the thermostat from the USB plug). Hopefully he hasn’t damaged your heat link.

The Heat Link doesn’t require an earth so any unused earth wires should be terminated in a choc block or similar. Earth coloured wires should not be used for anything other than an earth.

It sounds like the only thing he’s got right is taking mains power to the LN on the heat link to power it.

IIRC mine is wired with a small jumper cable from L to Common and then the call for heat back to the boiler to switch it. My Nest doesn’t control hot water.

I can’t really advise you how yours should be wired but it’s a simple job for a proper electrician - a 10 minute job really.
  • Mine wouldn't be used for hot water either, it's only to control the heating.

I've just got back from an airport run, going to have to try & sort this now.

Any chance you would be able to talk me through this so I could do it properly & not risk another shambles...

Only good thing of him doing a runner is he hasn't been paid for anything.

Going to go out in a limb & ask but do you link the live from the boiler to terminal 3 within the heat link as per the combi instruction or is it possible this is different for each boiler?

Also live from the heat link termial links to terminal two of the heat link?

Any help would be grateful to avoid a call out for another heating engineer tomorrow

Glad the above confirmed he was a cowboy.. another on the !!!! list
  • Just realised doing the above doesn't solve the call for heat regardless if the above is correct or not...

    Dam cowboy tradesmen

Looking at the diagram it has to go to 2 & 3

But I think the capriz has 2 room stat connections, 1 to the pcb which is 240 and 1 to a small connector block on the pcb housing which is low voltage. I will have a look at the manufacturers instructions tomorrow to check.
  • Doesn't look like the Nest pros have a response on a Sunday morning either!

Tempted to have a go but don't know which connections to go to at the boiler so best not to..
  • I have a Heatline Capriz plus combi boiler and am trying to wire up my 3rd Gen nest but am having problems. The boiler has no external thermostat and is controlled purely from the front panel at the moment.
I have wired it up as the nest wiring digram suggests for a combi boiler, linked the nest thermostat to the heatlink but it won't turn the boiler on. I can hear the boiler making a noise when the nest is trying to turn the boiler on and off as if it's trying but it's not actually doing anything.

    Any advice is appreciated.
    TIA

    Not enough information.

You need to tell us where you connected 2 & 3 on the Heat Link to on the boiler?

    Did you remove the link?
  • Thanks for your reply. I wired it up exactly as shown on page 20 of the nest wiring diagram for a combi boiler

To the N & L as shown on page 19 of the capriz plus manual

With 3 from the nest going back to either L or RT on the boiler, with the same results.

There is a link between RT and 24v on the boiler as shown on page 19 of the manual on the right which I have not removed.

But then doing some research this morning I found an addendum to a Heatline Monza boiler

A different boiler I know, but this suggests I should remove that link.

I would have provided links to the PDFs but the forum wouldn't allow it

    Thanks

Nest Heat Link 3 should connect to RT not L.

The link needs to be removed as it is overriding the Nest controller.
