i'd say if you have papers saying 'it will be taken via DD in Xdays' etc , and never had a reminder in 2years, and no mention of arrears, you are perfectly entitled to believe there is nothing untoward.
Now if your contact details are incorrect, and they tried contacting you (which seems unlikely 'cos you're receiving bills to your addy) then that's their fault.
try and strike a deal. In most situations i'd expect they'd realise their fault, and the fact that out of £2.500, they could potentially get nothing so offer to pay 10% and work from there.
Admittedly, maybe you should have noticed, but conversely, so should they have.

pS) quote this to them 'need to do nothing....' on your bill.... that's a very good back-up point i'd say, especially if re-iterated for 2years!!!!Information provided is offered as a guide, and should not be deemed to be 100% accurate/correct. Success. It took several months to recieve a response, but 02 admitted liability and that they were not only responsible for the mistake, but also for not informing us of it and for the time it took for them to deal with the account (by which time the bill had gone up to £2,800).
We agreed on a one off payment of £1000.
When we called to make the payment - the customer sevice agent told me that no such deal was in place and that I must have been mistaken and should wait until the account was passed to a debt agency to negotiate a deal.
I called again a few days later - and 02 apologised again for their mistake and lowered the agreed payment to £900 for the inconvieniance and have also corrected our credit file.
A TOTAL SAVING OF £1,9000
