Debit card expired

Options
When your debit card is due to expire, or is expired, is it your responsibility to obtain a new one, or does the bank/ building society have an obligation to send you a new one with a new pin?

I ask because my metro bank card expired in September, and they did not send me a new one, even though I've used it many times before, indeed I had used it in September. I seem to vaguely remember Nationwide sent out new cards without user intervention. I was just curious about this for the future.

Normally the bank sends you a new one the month before the old one is due to expire. If its to replace an existing card your PIN normally doesn't change.

In my experience banks send replacement cards automatically 2-4 weeks before expiry and do not change the PIN. I don't know that there is any obligation to do so but apart from keeping customers happy they get commission each time you use your card so it is in their interests to ensure that you have a working card.

If a card doesn't arrive in good time report it as it could have been lost or stolen in the mail.

Ok I sent them a secure message. I have the date of their last correspondence so I mentioned that too. I switched the account this week which may complicate things, but oh well. I have also not received any paper work for the switch from their end, and not received any paperwork for a new savings account which I opened with them!

This despite all other banking letters (including the new debit card from the other bank upon switching) having arrived in the post...very strange indeed..

Both our Co-op cards expired on October 31st,sonot having received replacements I rang to check that we had not been missed out.

I was told that the policy is not to send them out more than 14 days before they are needed, so to expect at about 10 days to go.

Doesn't that imply they should have posted them mid October, and they're now nearly 3 weeks overdue, rather than 10 days to go?

There will be a huge amount of new cards in the post soon. Barclays have informed us that our sort code will be changing mid November and, as that is on our debit cards, I presume new cards will be needed.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Remember that Metro can print their own cards in house so you could just pop into a branch.

I've been with Metro Bank long enough now to have two cards expire.

Both times, they failed to send a new one automatically. When I enquired first time, they said one was issued automatically, but they would cancel it and reissue. The new one arrived in the post about a week later. Second time, I got a new one from a branch, they confirmed no new card was issued on my account (this was about a week before the old one expired).

They're a great bank if you have a branch locally. I've now moved somewhere without a branch, which can sometimes add obstacles for services which they seem to keep branch oriented.

Thanks for the warnings. I have just checked and fortunately I have several months remaining on my card (which is my first). I will make a note to chase when the time approaches for it to expire.
