I know a mum who bought a Lego 747 kit in bits off eBay. Downloaded the instructions, sorted every bit by colour initially & built it (all by nights, while son asleep). Satisfied it was all there, she took it all apart again & left it it, with instructions giftboxed for her son that Christmas.
It was quiet, she remembered fondly. Then he too disassembled it & began building Other things with the bits. It is a gift that keeps on giving, so it's worth saving for.0 -
My son has quite a few Mega Bloks Halo sets and they're pretty good - although the instructions are nowhere near as good as the Lego ones.0

We've had some of the cheap sets from Wilko before. It does look slightly cheaper than normal Lego, but it is priced significantly less than that! It's now all mixed in with the actual Lego pieces, and fits together perfectly well with them.0

Mega Bloks are fine and the brand sold in Smyths was good too. Lego is overpriced but still has the best variety of basic pieces.0

Google Lepin , all reports reckon its nearly as good, about 1/2 the price of lego.
for the die hard lego fans it causes great divide by being a total copy of obsolete / current sets.0
