How to cancel BT?

I have received an offer from Talk Talk for phone and broadband. £18.95 month

I am currently with BT but on a 24 month contract where I am paying on average £33 a month and I now do not get some of the free stuff such as caller display, etc which will expire after the first 12 months.

I checked with BT today and they want to charge me £270 to cancel the contract which has 12 months remaining.

Is there anyway of challenging this fee? My Broadband service is awful anyway and barely gets 1mb some days

Thanks

You want to break the contract you pay .
If you have an awful service presume you have contacted the ISP regarding this .
If you have gone through the faults and complaints procedure they may agree you leave without penalty .

But unless you move to VM your service will be coming down the same BT line .

Usual reasons for poor speed are .
One its over WiFi and customer settings are why .
Two internal wiring is at fault .

Dont pay for any exit fees - BT sent me an email today re. price changes from January and the email does say:

"If you want to leave and you're within your minimum contract term, you'll need to call us within 30 days of receiving this email to avoid paying a charge for leaving early. You'll need to give us 30 days' notice to leave (or 14 days if you're switching to a new provider). We won't charge you for any increase in price during that time.

We hope you'll enjoy the changes we're making."
  • I also want to leave BT but they say I have to pay up my contract.
If you're not getting the service BT say you should get (ie. speed) then you've got grounds for compensation or quitting.
As xman says if Bt are going to put yout charges up you can cancel your contract at no cost.

Wait till you receive the price rise email. Then phone then up, don’t say your cancelling tell them you will be moving to another supplier due to the price rise email you received and make sure this is noted in your account or they will still try and charge you when you move.

Have a read through this, as others have said, tell them you are leaving because of the price rise.

You can say you want to leave because of bad service, but the whole thing is a bit long winded and more hassle than its worth, best to stick with the price rise excuse.

    Thanks.

I also got that letter and I will be calling. No other provider will be better as we are on an old line that Openreach do not seem to have on their radar for upgrading, but I would rather pay less for rubbish.

Your line won't be on the radar for replacement unless you are reporting a problem with the telephone or they are seeing a lot of faults in the multicore cable that runs from the exchange to your local cab. I.E. e few of your neighbours are having problems as well.

I was hoping we would be inline for Superfast as 97% of my exchange has it, with a few exceptions.... Tried them all from BT to MP and now they are upgrading the rest to super super fast 330 mb
