Istanbul is one of the greatest cities on the planet. So far as safety is concerned, there'll only be a problem if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, exactly like in London or any other big city these days. It'a long way for a weekend though, about a 4 hour flight.holidaysforme wrote: »Also looking at Budapest and Bucharest.
When we go to Romania next June, we'll only be topping and tailing in Bucharest for overnight accommodation. Transylvania is only 2 hours away by train, and that's the big draw0 -

Thanks Pete. Your Transylvania trip looks fantastic. Have been to Budapest a couple of times, but would love to re visit .Bucharest. When we were last there in the early 90's, it still felt very much like a communist country!
As for Istanbul, I've been fascinated with it for a long time, and yes you are right of course- wrong place wrong time and all that...
A friend of mine was saying that she went with her husband a couple of years ago, but would not visit with her daughters as she felt a bit vulnerable as a female, even with her husband in tow!something to be aware of, I suppose.0 -
Istanbul is very interesting and can be great value for money.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Usually have my year planned out by now and everything booked! But we're getting an extension and are just at the stage of choosing builders so don't know when work will start, and don't want to be on hols while the builders are in. Hoping for a 7-10day holiday in May/June to either Germany or Croatia/Serbia - PompeyPete I am copying part of your itinerary, then Florida for 2 weeks in October. Couple of long weekends to see family and that will probably be it until 2019."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better." Paul Theroux0

Holiday booking for 2018 isn't open at my workplace yet, so these are all ideas in my head with nothing booked, but the general idea is
April - Go to France for the 100th anniversary of my husband's Great Grandad's death in WW1. We can't go on the actual date as it falls outside the school Easter hols but we can be there the week before when they do their monthly memorial service. Sadly this may be the last time we holiday as a family of 4as DS will be 18, perhaps going to Uni and doing his own thing
July/August - DS wishes to travel around Europe for 7-10 days just with his Dad as part of his 18th birthday celebration. I intend booking DD on a drama summer residential and using the time for me, DH and DS to spend some time together, maybe doing some day trips, maybe away for a few days in England, sight-seeing.
We would then do a trip abroad possibly just 3 of us, as DS has said he has no wish to go on a lazy sunshine hol.
November - I am hoping if DH is still going to America on buisness I can join him, will very much depend on timings and where next years conference is though.
December - Annual long weekend trip to France/Belgium with friends, exact destination as yet unknown.
Only a couple of years left, then I'm out of being tied to school hols. Was very envious reading through seeing destinations in months I just couldn't go away in.0 -
Only two more years being tied to school hols fir us as well Spendless!
Cant wait to be able to go away in the cheaper and less crowded months..:)
You have a lovely variety of things planned for 2018.0 -
Egypt in January for 11 nights and looking at planning a 3 week trip around Vietnam in June."Sometimes life sucks....but the alternative is unacceptable."0

Nothing booked in yet although we’re typically quite late bookers so I guess we have a bit of time. That said, we’ll be learning how to travel with a one-year old so that might change our usual approach a tad I guess.
I imagine we’ll aim for a city break or two (I fancy Amsterdam, Copenhagen or Brussels with a toddler, although we’ve been to all three before), perhaps a longer break in Europe (Greece?) and ideally a long-haul trio too. We’ve managed Denver and Australia with the baby this year, so it’d be nice to get some more stamps in his passport if practical!
I’ll also have 3-4 short (but long-haul) trips with work. These don’t count as holidays, but it’d be nice if my family could come along on one of them.0
