Ignore it. Texting will simply encourage further communication. No one seriously contemplating a civil action would supply only a mobile number. You have no obligation whatever to respond.

You can't withhold your number when sending an SMS from a mobile phone.
There are websites where you can send anonymous text messages but as far as I'm aware, you can't receive a reply back.

You can get a reply to a text sent online.

Right so noted your reg, contacted police and gave a reason for delay as dvla taking time sending details.

But no mention of insurance company - who can search to see if a car is insured by registration alone and would've applied for the keeper details.

As for DVLA's willingness to profit from selling our personal details....it would likely take someone being killed/nearly being killed by some psycho stalker/deranged violent ex who obtained their address via DVLA with just their registration. Personally I don't think they or any other company should be entitled to pass on my data (let alone sell it) without my consent but it would be particularly worrying if any random weirdo who takes a liking to you as they see you drive by them in your car could find out where you live. The DVLA might as well draw them a bloody map.

The only time I've asked the DVLA for details (after a collision and the other car disappeared when I stopped in a lay by to write down the number, then I went to the police station), it took under 2 weeks, including 2 lots of second class post.

If you truly did hit this car in the car park, the owner could have spoken to you there.

Do you pay by debit or credit card at the supermarket, or do you have a loyalty card there? Can you check your statements to see if you were even there on the same day?

The other party doesn't need to supply any information from you to the police. If the police truly want details from you they can ask for themselves, and they can get registration details in a few seconds, but I think much of this has already been said above.

When I last spoke to the police about an accident, the police supplied me details of the other party - registration, company name and address, driver name, insurer. Not the other way round.

If you read threads on the parking tickets sub-forum, you often see advice to posters to make a subject access request to DVLA to see who requested the information. Search SAR or subject access request on that forum.
  • I made a SAR to DVLA and they have responded (very quickly!) to tell me that DVLA has not released any information regarding my VRN. Which makes things appear even weirder, how did the individual get my address?
