This was supposed to have happened in July. He or she noted my number and reported the incident to the police and have "forms to fill out to send them regarding prosecution". The delay is due to the time taken by DVLA to pass on my details. I have no recollection of this incident although it's quite possible I was in the supermarket at the time stated.

It shouldn't have taken them that long to get the information from the DVLA, but I suppose if it was someone new to these things, perhaps sent a letter to the DVLA rather than the correct form plus payment and were tardy with dealing with the matter then it is feasible.

I also assume as you say it was possible you were at the supermarket then this incident is supposed to have happened local to you and not the other end of the country?
  • Yes it's a local supermarket.

But only after getting a new sim card for your phone. (you can get these free or for a very small amount).
You don't really want to give them your normal phone number just in case you get plagued with calls or texts from them in the future.

Good point, but it's easier just to withhold your number.

As an aside, i do think its appalling how most anyone can obtain data from the DVLA be it prospective claimants or bent car park operators seeking to extort payments for alleged parking trespasses. I wonder what evidence there is to substantiate the claim? It seems plausible that its a local supermarket which presumably you use and they happen to have obtained your reg. If a car has been damaged presumably there may be corresponding markings on your car?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Is it a 070 "follow me" number or an 07x mobile number?

070 numbers premium rate numbers and can cost 65p per min plus a 51p set up charge. Follow me numbers starting 070 are widely used by scammers (and a small amount of legitmate users).

You can't withhold your number when sending an SMS from a mobile phone.
There are websites where you can send anonymous text messages but as far as I'm aware, you can't receive a reply back.

Also how does a private individual get my address from DVLA?

Maybe the scammers just cruised past your house and noted the reg on your car and got your name off the voting register. Mentioned a local supermarket as it's likely you would have visited it. Leave it a few months so you can't remember the visit clearly.

The problem with that is unless the OP is the only adult living at the property concerned, the person making the claim wouldn't know who was the registered keeper of the car.
It's also a possibility that the OP has opted out of the open copy of the electoral register so that their personal details aren't shown on it.

For the sake of a £2.50 payment, it would be easier to get the details from the DVLA.
