you can log in as gmail or googlemail, and will receive messages sent in either format, but messages will be sent as googlemail

if you like to have all messages appear in one account, you could forward the 2nd address to the first

I wonder if you can fix that by going into settings, accounts and typing in the @gmail version under "send mail as"

Don't see why it wouldn't work.
(can't try it myself because my gmail accounts send as @gmail - probably because they're so old)
