Are you aware that the 2nd cohort of SMETS1 will be upgraded next month?. That will mean 4million SMETS1 meters will be able to be read remotely by other suppliers. That represents almost 1/3rd of all SMETS1 meters.
There are plans for a future, final cohort if your mother is not included in either of the first 2.

That is a fairly old piece published BEFORE the proposed date for the start of the adoption programme; I haven't seen anything which confirms that this first cohort of SMETS1 meters have yet been adopted successfully??

If any of the cons mentioned did eventually come into play what is there stopping people from having their smart meters removed or disabled? It's your home, so I can't imagine anything lawful is going to stop this happening beyond a potential charge.
Assuming you can have it removed it'll cost you a fortune, and you won't be first in the queue given that the smart meter roll out is so far behind schedule. More likely to be a case of 'Gotcha !'
Is it safe to say that I can run with, get a smart meter, possibly make small savings, if not doesn't matter, if anything as per content on this post occurs later on, have it removed/disabled?
You'd be far better off with a clip-on £30 energy monitor if you really need something that will show you whether any light bulbs have been left on.

    "fairly old"?

The article is dated 05/03/2019, but agreed, that was indeed before the start of the first cohort.

The first cohort was due to start in May 2019, but clearly by March, sufficient confidence existed to announce the start of the second cohort in September.

Here's a later article dated end of May 2019
    https://www.sms-plc.com/insights/blogs-news/government-approves-smets1-migration-for-secure-meters/

As it states there, a one year window exists for each cohort for the work to be completed.

The first phase deals with smart meters that have already fallen dumb.

You've not seen anything which confirms that this first cohort of SMETS1 meters have yet been adopted successfully??

Well the first cohort window is still open, and will be until May 2020, so no they have not completed it yet. But the target is to have all SMETS1 upgraded (or the 1% that cannot be upgraded, replaced) by end of 2020. Therefore, if the 1 year window is to remain for the third and final cohort, we should expect that to start by around the end of this year/beginning of next.

But as for confirmation cohort 1 has commenced, here is a report from earlier this month that I trust assists you :)
The Data and Communications Company (DCC) network, which is Britain’s national smart meter network, is beginning the first part of its three-phase roll-out to migrate SMETS1 onto their infrastructure.

Sorry -All that says is that the adoption was due to start on 27th July = NO PROOF that ANY have actually been moved on to the DCC yet.

This whole project has been notable for all the positive hot wind being generated by PR types:rotfl:Wait for the next press release!!

I've tried the clip-on variants in the past and wasn't really impressed. Whilst you seem very against smart meters and I do consider your input, condescending comments are merely fueling your over the top theories here. Disregarding the bulb comment, if there's any monitor you would personally recommend as an alternative to monitoring usage on a whole, I would gladly look into it.

You said "it will cost a fortune" is this just more conjecture? If there's something bullet proof that can substantiate that in the here and now, let me know. It just seems again everything is a case of "this could happen" which is applicable to literally anything. You may as well advocate zero tech.

The IHD provided by Ovo does not show meter readings.

The Octopus IHD for their Smart! meter does not display a meter reading either - to get that you have to press button 6 on the physical meter 4 times.

My mothers 'Secure' make IHD (supplied by TOTO, SMETS1) does not have a facility to show gas/electricity meter readings.

    This surprises me greatly.

Showing meter readings seems like a pretty basic feature that I would expect all in-home units to be able to do.
  • the HDu is a pipit 500, I can only find displays in the manual provided and pressing all buttons for energy in 3/day/hr or total so far - from whenever Eversmart zeroed it, also daily/monthly usage.
NO basic meter reading - logically it should be the first screen surely?

I have the same IHD from Octopus.

I'm presuming that the logic went that the meter readings were being sent to the company and the consumer does not NEED to to know them, the IHD MUST show £ as that would drive the consumer to reduce cost. So the cheap IHD were built to the minimum spec.

But this cost driven argument is defeated by the practice of setting a fixed monthly DD.

So average customer never reads their meters and pays say £50pm based on estimated bills, gets a smart meter installed, after 6 months their DD goes up to £60 because their previous estimates were too low. They then complain that their Smart meter doesn't work and their bills have gone up.

I have an elderly friend with a smart meter, she phones the supplier to complain that she has been overcharged because her IHD says the cost for last month was £39.22 but they took £40 from her bank.

I've really enjoyed having a smart meter for the last two years. I don't use the IHD, but I've found the timely information in the app and on the website very useful; and it really has helped me to monitor my fuel consumption.

Sadly, I'm leaving Ovo, and the cheapest alternative suppliers do not currently support smart meters!
