There's more concerns being raised as to these meters.

We spy trouble: Even GCHQ is worried about smart meters say experts who fear a Trojan horse-style cyber attack

Experts warn of dire consequences if hackers gain access to smart meters

Fear that hackers could cut off energy supplies and break into other gadgets

GCHQ, it is believed, has also raised concerns over the security of smart meters

Security issues blamed for SMETS 2 smart meters being three years overdue

    http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-5403473/Experts-say-GCHQ-concerned-smart-meters.html

As The Mail on Sunday has highlighted, some users have experienced billing problems, meters suddenly not working.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but also Watchdog did a programme about the dangers of incorrectly fitted meters

Absolutely nothing to do with "smart " meters. This is a concern about meter fitting in general which has been in force ever since energy meters were first installed and replaced
Yet another rag jumping on the smart meter knocking bandwagon.
I ve seen many meters over the years which have developed into electric fires and every one was due to electric meter tampering. Why don`t these little rags try highlighting the vast number of meter tampering going off nowadays
Gas meters will also leak at the unions when occupiers indulge in meter substitution or reversal of the meter to make the readings run backwards. Many a property has blown to smithereens taking next doors with it because of energy thieving which go s off in the UK unchecked and unpunished.

I am currently with Eon and have a Smart Meter which was installed when they first started using them a few years ago.

When my current tariff ends I am going to move to another supplier.

I know the Smart Meter will not function when I do that but what will still work?

Will I be able to get the meter readings from the smart meter or will I have to take them manually from the electric and gas meters?

Will Eon still be responsible for maintaining the house meters, ie I imagine the gas meter will run off a battery so will Eon be responsible for changing that, and would there be a charge for it?

    Thank you in advance.

Hello Montypython and sorry to lose you.

From what you've said, it's likely your meters will revert to traditional or dumb types and will need to be read manually. They'll continue to record usage as now but won't be able to send readings remotely. Also, your In-Home Display will not show your usage in pounds and pence, it will only show you the kilowatt hours (kWh) used.

As Michaelw says, your new supplier will take over the meter and look after any maintenance issues.

Hope this explains Montypython. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

Can you comment on Ovo's claim that if you switch between Ovo and EON, you smart meter will carry on being smart?

    Thank you for your reply.

I realise my in home will not display the cost in pounds, but, will it show the gas and electric meter reading?

I know how to read the meters manually.
I always wanted to give stuff away.

Does your IHD show the meter reading? Mine doesn't! I'm with Ovo, but I thought the meters were the same.

Morning Nick_C and sorry but don't think I can offer much on this. It depends on the type of smart meter you have fitted. I would normally refer customers to one of our smart meter specialists but they won't be able to see details of your metering set up as these are restricted to the current supplier only.

Initially, it's best to talk to Ovo as they'll know what type of smart meter you have. Ask them to talk to our smart teams to see what the impact of joining us would have on the meter.

Sorry again I can't be of more help here Nick_C.

    Morning Montypython.

If the display shows the meter readings now then you'll still be able to see them if you switch to another supplier.

It all depends on the type of display. Since we first started fitting smart meters, we've used several different types of display and the earlier ones didn't show readings at all. Later ones, though, do.

As I say, if you can see them now, you'll be okay following a switch.

Hope this answers your question Montypython. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

That is your answer Nick_C, Malc does nt know, (he should know !) but I would think the answer would be that seeing as Ovo have always used Secure Liberty meters from day one and now Eon also have decided to cut costs and use the very same smart meters , then it may well show just the reading only and not have any tariff or cost information displayed. .
Ovo s claims about their smart IHD working with other suppliers who use Secure products will be partly true if that is the case.
Both suppliers have no respect for their customers buying these appalling meters in the first place.
Malc can t have had a look at the Secure Liberty meter to know how bad it is.The damn thing actually shows the Kvarh reading ( thats Kilo volt amps reactive hours Malc ).
That will confuse the old Fred, Joyce, Joe and Malcs of this world because the only important screen of the 6 displayed screens shows 8 digits and a miniscule decimal point on the reading screen which shows KW, Han, and a lone "H " for some unearthly reason lol.
