Palmanova - Legionnaires Disease

Hi, we have just returned from a holiday in Palmanova where there is currently an outbreak of Legionnaires disease. We arrived on 23/10 at Sol Palmanova, unaware of any resort issues. We had a few problems at the hotel, such as, a locked balcony which took 2 days to rectify, an uncooked chicken and when we showed a waiter, who then told the head waiter, an argument began just behind where we sat in the hotel restaurant, the head waiter and chef discussing the under cooked chicken, voices were raised and eventually a manager came in and escorted both the head waiter and the chef into the back of the restaurant, no one apologised. So not a good start to our holiday.

On our 3rd day at the hotel, we received a note under our door stating that "due to unforeseen circumstances all customers are being moved to another hotel in a different resort", so I went to speak to the manager and was told that the hotel had received booking cancellations due to resort problems and it would not be cost effective to keep us in the hotel, there was no mention of the disease, not even when I explained my husband was ill and the last thing he needed was to be moved, we was not told to get him checked out or anything.

As a family, we decided to move sooner than the Friday 27/10, so I asked the manager if we could move sooner, she came back and said we could move on the Thursday 26/10 instead. We wasn't happy because we loved the hotel I had booked and didn't want to disrupt our holiday but having no choice, we moved Thursday.

We wasn't happy with the new hotel, it was at the far end of Magaluf, the food was poor and there was no entertainment on apart from a little for the kids club. I decided I was going to speak to the manager and let them know our disappointment but before that happened, we got chatting to some other customers who told us about Legionnaires disease in the resort and that their travel against had rang them before they departed for Spain to tell them they had to move them because they didn't want to put them at risk due to the disease hitting the resort. I was fuming as you can imagine and after looking further into it I went to speak to the hotel manager. There was no hotel manager available that day so I had to tell the receptionist my concerns who then told me he was going to ring the manager and out my concerns in their system and suggested I go back the next day and speak to the manager ahi will have already been informed about my issues.

The next day, which was also the day we had to return to the UK, I spoke to the manager who knew nothing of our problems because she felt she should help out on reception instead of looking in the system to see if there was any issues! The reception and hotel was dead by the way, she even said so herself so was not needed on reception. She said she had no idea why we had been moved to her hotel! She suggested I complain when I get home but will again add to my complaint on their system.

Now I am home, I want to complain, it totally ruined our holiday and since returning 5 of our party are ill with Legionnaires disease like symptoms, so all getting checked out at the doctors.

There is more to this story, such as a member of staff from our hotel comfirmjng that there is suspected Legionnaires disease at our hotel and that was on the 13/10, so why did the hotel still allow us to check in at that hotel, we booked direct with the hotel.

So this is where J need your help, should I write direct to the head office? What should I expect as compensation for the fact they put all my family's health at risk and ruined our holiday?

Thank you for any help and sorry for the long message.

Sue

I just want to add that if any of your party has suspected legionnaires disease then you should be getting urgent medical attention , if you haven't been to the doctors yet then don't delay.

But the compo claim is more important :rotfl:
  • Hi, yes that is the hotel. Just don't know what to do now, they can't expect to put my families health at risk like that and then move us to another hotel, in a different resort, with In superior food and entertainment and not expect to offer compensation. It really did spoil our holiday, I spent every day apart from one talking to the 2 managers of the hotels involved, the one day I didn't talk to them was the one day we had to move, so every day was affected by it.

We have been in touch with our doctor and waiting for them to call us back to see what we need to do.

Whilst i would not expect anybody to put my families health at risk BUT would expect to be moved to another hotel if Legionnaires was suspected of being a risk, the lower standards would be a lower priority to me than catching a possible life threatening desease:eek:
  • Ofcourse and that is exactly my point, why did they allow us to stay there when they suspected the disease was in their hotel. This isn't about getting checked out by the doctor, that is all in hand or that we should not have been moved, my problem is why did they put my family at risk when they knew there was a possibility that my family may catch the disease. It just isn't good enough.

    And your point is.......

I had already said that we was in touch with our doctor, obviously that is priority!

Thank you. One member has been tested and it is likely they have the disease, others are being tested tomorrow and we are keeping an eye on the remaining members of the family and will take them straight to the doctors if they begin to show any of the symptoms.

Did you book a true package holiday or direct with the hotel?

  • They've still not found the source so hotels aren't going to turn guests away unless they're ordered to close down. It would be the same in the UK.
