  • We got married in 2011 we spent £400 mainly on food and drink for the reception, no one else contributed.

    Is that a typo?

I read that as being the cost of the divorce.

    Ah, that makes sense.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Married 4 years ago and it cost just over £1000 incuding dress, rings, and a sit down meal for 25 people.

I just don't get the whole big spend on a wedding thing. It doesn't have to cost a lot to have a fabulous day with friends and family.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Around £3,000 16 years ago all paid for by my parents. Mum got my dress at cost price (she worked in a wedding shop at the time), registry office, small sit down meal and then a buffet for 100 people in the evening. I married on a Friday and really just wanted immediate family and no evening reception but it just snowballed into something bigger, mostly driven by my mum.

Had I been paying for it, it would have cost around £500:)

A few months later my brother married abroad (this holiday became our honeymoon) and it was brilliant. We are considering renewing our vows abroad in the year DH turns 50 and the kids turn 21 and 18, assuming they still want to holiday with us.

Married in home church, reception in church hall, catered for by women of the Mothers' Union, off to pub afterwards.

I made my dress and that of one bridesmaid, an aunt made the two others. OH paid for cars and invitations.

Honeymoon in London. We cut our cloth according to our means in these days, but a great time was had by all.

    Just celebrated Golden Wedding!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

£168, a couple of weeks ago.
That's 2x£40 for both of us to give the legal notice, and £88 for the Registry Office ceremony with two witnesses and three copies of the marriage certificate.

No rings, and we wore clothes we had already.

First wedding was barely more than a £100, including £10 each for the two witnesses. I think the ring was £25 on top. No guests.

Second wedding was much larger church wedding. Everybody and his dog (and our cat) seemed to be invited and it was an all day event from 2 until 2 with no separate day/evening guest list. The cost was around £6k, although that did include the honeymoon (US road trip).

No money borrowed or owed and we each already owned a house, so no guilt trip necessary there. We are also lucky in both having large supportive families who all mucked in together for the wedding preparations.
