You might like to look at the following which is from the HSE Display Screen Regulations 1992. It outlines good practise in the workplace but it relevant to the domestic uses of monitors.

Just download colorveil and it will dim your screen to your liking.0 -

Ive gotten the brightness down as low as it will do but its still too bright, cant figure out anything else, heres the instructions if anyone has any ideas?
