Laptop/Phone WIFI Abroad

Hey,
I'm to going to the States in January, and staying with a friend, but he doesn't have WIFI due to the cost. I'm there for 2.5 weeks.
Can you get a USB dongle for the laptop so that can use wifi on phone and laptop cheaply when abroad? I want to be able to use my phone and my laptop when abroad if possible.
