Car sale cancelled - refund of car tax

Options
I paid a deposit on a used car yesterday and paid the toad tax online, ready to collect the vehicle on Monday.

I'm no longer buying the vehicle due to issues I identified by viewing the MOT online (dealer 'hadn't noticed' the oil leaks advisory mentioned on the last Mot so hadn't disclosed this). I've been back online to try to cancel the tax and get it refunded but can't figure it out.

I can't select the option to say I've sold or transferred the vehicle as the purchase didn't complete in the first place?

I was wondering if anyone knew how to go about cancelling the tax and getting a refund?

Lesson learnt is always view the information you can online before agreeing to purchase a vehicle!

I really wouldn't bother unwinding a sale solely because of an oil leak advisory - I had one this year. And, yes, it was fair enough - there had been a substantial leak... which had been caused by a five quid hose that took ten minutes to change.

That said, "transferred" is definitely the best option. Don't get too hung up on the technicalities of "But I never completed the sale" - you taxed it expecting it to be in your keepership, and you are now cancelling that.

Just get the dealer to sort the leak out. Problem solved .

A lot of stations are keen to put these ADVISORIES over such minor seeps. Although tbh I suppose a slight seep over time got appear more when it spreads over the sump etc
  • I had an advisory for a leaking shock absorber but the next year it had mysteriously repaired itself, maybe the oil leak was the same

An advisory is just something that's passed - but the tester thinks he should make you aware of. No more than that. There is absolutely no set procedure or wording or standard for them.
  • Thanks. To be honest there's been a couple of other issues with some other information the dealer told us and we later found out wasn't quite true, so not too keen to progress the sale with him now.

I'll have a look at the transferred option online

    Thanks again

If you didn't own the car how could you tax it? You need the new keepers part of the V5c to tax it.

If the dealer did give you the new keepers reference number then you need him to take it back into the trade and it will automatically cancel you and refund the unused months.

If you don't do it before the end of the month then you will lose the refund for November as once a month starts it's not refunded.
  • I was given the new keepers section of the v5 and was able to tax the vehicle with the document reference number on there. I've only paid a deposit though and the vehicle is still at the garage.

How much was the deposit as you may lose it?

You could try to sorn it now, using the same new keepers section. This will also refund unused tax.
  • The deposit was £300, but the dealer has said on the phone he would refund this if we want to cancel the sale
