Thanks for everyones help. Spoke to Major travel this morning and as Woby_Tide has stated they've said I can claim back the airport tax which means I can recuperate £468 of the £994 total, so my stupidity has cost £526!! But still a lot healthier than last night.
Tabmow, I'll try writing a letter and let you know how I get on - chances are slim maybe zero that I'll get anywhere but it's worth trying for a letter.

Contact Lufthansa directly. Airlines can often be more helpful than travel agents in this situation.

In the first instance use the saynoto0870 website to get a geographic number in the UK for Lufthansa, and be prepared to spend some time on hold. Also explore their web page to find numbers in Germany, and use the callchecker on this site to find cheap ways to telephone them there.

I think your chances of getting the date changed are a little better than fifty-fifty, so it is worth being a little persistent. But obviously you need to be polite, because they are not obliged to give you anything.

Sorry you didn't get all your money back, but glad you have got nearly half back (scary how much taxes are!). Agree with Voyager, no harm in calling Lufthansa x
