As above, our newly purchased, privately, 2010 Smart For two now has an engine warning light on, it seems OK and is probably a lambda sensor but I want to make sure before I try to remove and clean it.

Just go on eBay and search obd2 scanner, buy from UK seller.
Or look on Amazon.
Either should cost less than £15.0 -

Thanks both, yes I had seen these but wonder if they actually work properly on the Smart. People have complained they do not work with certain cars, some Renaults for example.0

.I have the Autphix.. . OBDMATE OM123 scanner from amazon seller and it has worked on every car I have connected it to. It cost 40 pounds about 18 months ago. There is usually a ask the seller a question facility. I get e mails asking if it works on this or that car .I haven't tried it on a smart car yet. It gives fault code and brief description of fault. It has live data on it too, so you can monitor engine running. It can save you a fortune, Don't go buying sensors as some you can test yourself. .0

Perhaps join a Smart car forum and ask there.
With my car, you can do a "key dance" and it will give you basic faults stored. Got that info from the forums.
Again with my car, not all scanners can read all codes. There are some better than others, but a car specific forum would be more likely to have a recommendation for you.0 -
I forgot to mention it can give you stored historic fault codes and will turn off engine light. So if you have replaced part or repaired you will know if all is ok if light does not come on again, It will erase historic codes too0

You (and me) are likely to make a mess. Let someone who knows what they’re doing tinker about with the car.0

I was joking.0

I’m being serious. Every time I’ve tried tampering with a car it’s gone wrong.0

Don't get a self contained scanner. Better to buy a Bluetooth OBDII adapter and connect it to your phone or computer. That way you can often get specific software for your vehicle that can read the manufacturers codes.
Something like the device linked below should do nicely.
