Am I entitled to compensation

I have contacted consumer rights for advice and they stated I am entitled to compensation for my wedding dress. I got married 2 weeks ago and on my finished dress (which was made to measure) you could see the ridge at the bottom of the corset through the material. This wasn't visible on the dress I tried instore when I Paid my deposit and was never explained to me that it could be an issue.

I ended up having to cut the corset out of my pricey suzanne Neville gown 2 weeks before the wedding after several tearful trips to the seamstress. It was so unbelievably stressful and I was so so disappointed. I then had to starve myself to avoid the lumps and bumps and as I wasn't expecting to wear a dress with no corset! I've complained to the bridal store and have requested compensation. Do you think this is reasonable enough? Never mind the fact I ended up disappointed with a dress that was not what I ordered, I was under so much emotional stress also

Was the seamstress who did the alterations working for the shop from which you purchased the dress?
  • She was recommended by them but works for herself

In that case the bridal store owes you nothing.

There’s potentially a claim against the seamstress but it would depend on exactly what was discussed and what you asked for.

and whether the seamstress did any work on the dress that you originally tried on in store. Was she responsible for adding the corset to that dress?

  • But before the seamstress took any action I sought advice from the store and let them know I wasn't happy with the obvious line in the dress. They offered advice and I took it to the seamstress who said what they suggested can't be done. I then went back to the store and they didn't respond to me. I had 2 weeks til my wedding and at the end of the day the dress was supplied to me by then and the problem was not on the dress I tried on initially so I can't see how it's is the seamstress' fault?
  • No I only went to the seamstress after I picked up the final dress from the bridal store. It was made by the designer
  • I also have photo evidence of the dress I tried on the day I paid my deposit and the flaw in the final dress to show it wasn't there on the sample. I also have pics of other brides in the same dress where this problem does not show

You had the right to reject the dress for a full refund. It gets complicated because instead you chose to adjust the dress. Did the shop acknowledge the fault and agree to cover the cost of repairs, or do they feel this was an adjustment from personal choice?

It's certainly not a clear cut situation, as on the information given, you accepted the dress and then adjusted it.

Can you post pictures of the original and the flawed one? Obviously anonymise them first.
  • i would agree in any other situation I would not be entitled as I accepted the dress. But wedding dresses are different - it was ordered a year in advance and I only had 2 weeks til my wedding so I had no choice whatsoever than to wear this dress. I also did highlight the problem at this point and have a written trail to support this. Trying to wrk out how to attach the pics!

It wasn’t clear from your first post that the dress was wrong before being altered, it is written in a way that suggests you had the dress adjusted and the seamstress caused the problem.

Obviously without seeing it to know the style or how bad it was would it not have been easier to get a strip of ribbon or lace to cover the area you were unhappy with?
