Does anyone still Receive a Bonus at Work?

Options
Hi All,

Are bonuses now a thing of the past or do people still get them? If so is it a small token of appreciation perhaps at Christmas or are they more formal and substantial?

I used to get one but in recent jobs they have not been the norm.

  • My last employer used to give a Christmas bonus to all non commission earning staff.

Husband works for a large multinational and gets a bonus based on UK company performance and on that of the cost centre he manages.

Sister works for a high street bank and gets a bonus based on company and personal performance.

    Of course neither are guaranteed.

Nearly every place I've worked in the last 15 years (FTSE-100 and FTSE-250 listed companies) has had some sort of bonus scheme - usually based on personal performance/achievement of objectives/annual appraisal, and company (either group or business unit) performance as per its annual results. The maximum bonus potential is usually expressed as a percentage of salary, but there's no guarantee it'll pay out.

I've had a couple of Christmas bonus type gestures - a hamper of goodies, even (memorably) £500 of John Lewis vouchers (only once!), but these were very much one-off gestures, usually in recognition of a particularly challenging year / set of circumstances, so definitely not the norm.

It really depends on what size of company you work for and what level you are in the organisation - there's no general rule, other than to say pay rises and bonus payments are increasingly linked to performance rather than merely having been in the job for another year, or out of any sense of company benevolence or season of goodwill towards all men....

We get a bonus every Christmas. It's £75.00 each for our team. The managers and higher ups get more, not sure what though.

We also get our entire Christmas meal paid for as well as pretty much free alcohol and food all night at the Christmas party which is nice.

I'm leaving this employer in 2 weeks time so I am not sure if my new employer will give a Christmas bonus, certainly not this year anyway as I'll have only been there a couple months by then and I won't be able to find out from the other employees... I'll be the only one!

Our industry is struggling, we lost bonus for a year or two but projecting to get one this year, varies from 15-30% annual salary on average.

Voluntary sector, we occasionally got a very small bonus at Christmas, depending on the company coffers. Haven't had a payrise in years. Needless to say for the last couple of years the bonus hasn't been forthcoming either. Such is the state of funding at the moment.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

My husband hasn't had a pay rise, bonus or Christmas do for at least 8 years, possibly more. I'm personally delighted that they abandoned the annual dinner dance and weekend away. For spouses they were extremely tedious.

I'm not complaining because he has a good job, which he loves and for which he is very well paid. The company is also very hot on work/life balance and we don't underestimate the value of that. Having said all that I do wonder when normal service will resume.
  • Other ways now - I know I'm happy with 25 days hols + 8 bank holidays without building service instead of the usual 20+8. Plus the free lunch every day when at work.
You get the allowance straight away without having to wait for increase only felt after so many years service like in the olden days. A lot more companies offer more extensive benefits these days which probably ousts and will desist any bonus.

We do a bottle/crate of your choice and then money, somewhere between £100 - £500. Last year was £300.00 It's only a small firm, so it very depends what we can find down the back of the sofa.
