Amazon delivery to unknown neighbour - Help please!

Hi all, if anyone could advise me on my rather strange situation I'd be most grateful.
So I ordered a new laptop on Amazon which was delivered not to my address but a neighbour and all the information I had was his name and 'Door 19'. I live in 14 so naturally I wander down the corridor and ask 19 if he has it. He didn't. I went to the flat building across the parking lot in case it had been delivered at the 19 there. It hadn't.
So I get in touch with Amazon live chat who then proceed to tell me the exact coordinates where the delivery driver recorded the delivery. It's about an 8 minute walk from my house. They apologise and say they'll send out a replacement for me. Great. However, they advise me not to go chasing down the missing package as it would be a "wild goose chase". This clearly implies that they, also, will not chase it down.
So of course while it's great I'm getting a replacement the fact is that some random person has a rather expensive laptop in their home addressed to me. So of course I go and check out the area, mainly flats, and started ringing the bells of all the 19s I can find. No dice. Only one flat didn't answer, but I learned randomly from a neighbour that it was a girl who lived there with a young son, so seems unlikely.
What, then, is likely to have happened to this package? I know that I'm getting a replacement so no money lost or anything but it's frustrating to know that someone is keeping my package without any seemly effort to give it back to me.
What would other people do in this scenario? Just let it go? It seems bizarre that Amazon would just give up so easily on such a high-value item.
Thanks for any help!

I doubt Amazon will do nothing....leave them to chase it up with the courier company who have clearly not delivered it to the address they were provided with. The courier company will likely need to reimburse Amazon and start their own investigation...nothing to be gained by you doing anything0 -
or the tracking no. was given to you in error and was actually a neighbours package.
forget it,its up to Amazon to chase it.
Was the carrier amazon Logistics?0 -
It was Amazon Logistics, yes. I was thinking if it's the same driver who delivers my replacement tomorrow then I could ask him where he delivered it previously. I'd also be very interested to know why a) he didn't just deliver it to me. There was no attempted delivery at my address. And b) why it was left with a 'neighbour' who lives streets away.0

B is simple.
These drivers are paid to 'deliver'.
Theres no depot to leave items and they dont want to waste fuel coming back.0 -
One of Amazon's drivers stopped me on the pavement and asked me to take in a package for a house about 10 houses up, someone I didn't know. I asked how he knew I wasn't some random person who'd nick it, never to be seen again, and his reply was that he'd seen me putting stuff in my car so knew I lived in the area.
Quite frankly, it amazes me that anything ever gets delivered correctly with that sort of mindset. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Somethings weird, I was told that amazon logistics had a small radius around the main address that they were allowed to deliver in (else their scanner wouldn't let them deliver), something like 100 metres. There's no way they could have delivered 8 minutes away.0

The guy on Live Chat was equally confused. He didn't mention anything about that particular radius but he gave me the coordinates where the delivery driver stopped and it was indeed roughly 8 minutes away.I'm still confused as to why they didn't attempt the delivery to my address.0 -
Some drivers are as th1ck as !!!!!!.... sitting in my living room one day I saw a random man had let himself into my garden and was wandering around - so I gave it "Er .... !!!!!! .... er ... hello!" and he couldn't really speak English. He had in his hand a fancy phone with a map on it .... I assumed he wanted the business park next door, so I pointed at it and he left.0

I would hazard a guess that he got lost and thought he was delivering to the right address. If he hadn't then it probably wouldve been delivered to one of your actual neighbours rather than someone 2-3 miles down the road (assuming 8 mins is walking distance). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
