What currency for Barbados?

Hi all,
We are off to Barbados shortly and we are confused as to the best currency to take. Our options are take all of it in American dollars or exchange a small amount either into American Dollars or Bajan Dollars take the rest in cash and exchange as needed whilst in Barbados. We will be travelling to Jamaica not long after we return from Barbados and last time we went there we used only US dollars but we are self catering in Barbados, hence the need for more money.
We are, to say the least, confused.
Many thanks

Exchanging cash in general is an unnecessary expense, and buying USD to take to the Caribbean is fairly pointless. Obtain the 'travel' credit cards or prepaid cards (see advice here and MSE articles), keep your money in pounds until you use your card to pay or withdraw local cash from ATMs.Evolution, not revolution0

Hurry up about it, as it might take a week for a card to arrive.
https://www.starlingbank.com/travel/ is a good place to begin.
If you don't do the whole Smartphone thing, you could do much worse than the Virgin Money Essential Current Account Issue 2, though you'll have to go to a branch to apply.0
