I don't believe they do charge for putting plates on anymore. They only charge for transferring/retaining the plates now.
ETA: OP, get the plates made up (you'll need the certificate that proves you're entitled to use that registration) then between 7am and 7pm you can use the governments online service to put the new registration on (as soon as you do this, the old V5 reference will be invalid as a new one will be issued). Once you've done that online, you can then put the plates you've made up onto the vehicle.

Oh yeah and your insurance. Some will charge an admin fee, some won't. I think the road tax was automatic but would be worth checking to be sure (was a year ago nearly since I last transferred mine).You keep using that word. Well road tax was automatic earlier this year which makes sense and prepare to pay an admin fee to get the insurance details updated .0
