This was in my local news and also in Neighbourhood Watch emails.

Note that:
1 - A genuine NIP will be from an offender's local County Constabulary, or from the County where the alleged offence was commited, not gov.uk.
2 - No County Constabulary will issue a NIP as an email.
I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

You did the right thing because you were alert to dangers like that - I am trying to notify others who may not be, and may believe it's a genuine NIP.

How would they link a reg number to an email address? Surely nobody could fall for that one?

No name, no car/reg details, no address etc etc.

Anyone dumb enough to give their credit card details in response to this that doesn’t show the make/model of the car, or the name of the offender deserves to be scammed.

Unfortunately some people will panic when they receive something officialish looking and not stop to think.

Saying anyone who falls for the scam deserves it is harsh. I would agree that most people would see it for what it is but this email could go to all sorts elderly, vulnerable etc

I think that most elderly or vulnerable people who are email savvy should be aware of these dangers. I'm only 60 and would like to think that I'm quite aware of replying to these sorts of scams.

Looking at the consumer boards on here, it would seem that it's not the elderly who should be looking for protection, but younger people who foolishly follow ads on facebook etc because they've never learned that "some things can too good to be true"!

What with cloning, ID fraud and vehicle details accessible online, I wouldnt trust any so called "notice of intended prosecution" via email, mail or unsolicited phone call.
Sometimes my advice may not be great, but I'm not perfect and I do try my best. Please take this into account.

However seeing as NIP's are actually sent by regular mail it would be foolish to ignore any based on that!

So 'dumb people' deserve to be scammed? Not sure what you have against people with mental heath issues, but but problems can happen to anyone, just remember that

When have people with mental health problems been "dumb"?
