Card details compromised

Options
Hi all,

So, I am in Spain at the moment and To cut a long story short I discovered my card details have been used fraudulently and I get onto the bank and I discover a few transactions have been attempted including a pending one for Next Directory for £178.99

The bank were great and I've cancelled my card etc and a new one is being sent out. The last time I used my card was in the UK and I hadn't used it anywhere unusual for my details to have been stolen - but then I remembered I used it at Slimming World group less than 2 weeks ago (consultant has just got a new machine). This card machine I think it connects to her phone via Bluetooth and doesn't have a till roll like a traditional machine. Has anyone else had this happen? Needless to say I will be paying cash there from now on!

Seems a bit of a coincidence.

It is difficult to pinpoint where card details are compromised. It could be done at anytime in the lifetime of the card or you may even have a malware on your computer which has captured the number (I would run a virus scan when you get home).

Still sounds like the bank did well!

FWIW I have been paying at SW through the machine since I joined in January, and not had a problem.
    Take JReacher's advice.

If it’s a contactless card it could have been compromised anytime it has been out of the house with you whether you used it or not. All it takes is someone getting close enough with a mobile phone with the right software on it.

I didn't know this could happen until recently to be honest - I bought a purse recently from M&S that says it has card shield to prevent data being stolen from cards. I suppose the only surefire way to eliminate this would be to request a non contact less card from the bank.

This is incorrect there is no way to skim a contactless card and these are just rumors spread by people against contactless cards.

Even if they did skim the card the information that they would acquire wouldn't let them copy the card in anyway and it couldn't be used to make any kind of transaction.

    Are you sure about that?

It was on rip off Britain last week, they actually demonstrated it happening. They had an app on the phone, swiped it next to a pocket with a card in, uploaded the data to a laptop and then showed all of the info that had been taken.

Or are you saying that they faked the whole thing because they are against contactless cards?

I don’t like contactless cards just because I lost my card once, must’ve fallen out of my purse or got dropped as I was leaving a shop. It was used for four contactless payments in the 48 hours following before I noticed the card missing. First being within 30mins of me losing it, it was used in a McDonald’s drive through on the same retail park I had been shopping on. Luckily all small amounts and the bank covered it and reimbursed me but not everyone has the money in their accounts to cover even small extra payments until it’s resolved.

Like i said i'm not doubting they got information from the card but i can guarantee that they didn't then go on to use that information to make any kind of purchase. No useful information can be obtained from the cards that can actually be used to make a payment.

Also the 3 digit CVV is not even stored on the card so that would mean it would be impossible to make an online purchase even if they managed to get the card number off the card.

It's bad luck that you lost your card and then someone who would use it fraudulently found it but this is a very rare occurrence and the banks wouldn't have introduced contactless cards if this happened a lot.

Also you need to think that if you had dropped cash in the street then you certainly wouldn't have got it back at all.

Valli- What type of machine do they have at SW? This one is just a small white one and she puts the amount into her phone and if displays on the machine, then you put your card in and pin number. There is no till roll so you don't get a receipt. Could it be that the phone app (don't know what it is) is not secure? My card started in Nov 2015 and it only happens 10 days after I used this machine.

Had the bank contact me about a security issue someone tried opening a shop account with my card details.

But it was a card that i rarely used. The account was my bill one, o deposit money and its used for the direct debits.

Not used the actual card for almost a year. Not far off the replacement anyway. They didnt go into much details but said that card data maybe stored for a while before they attempt to use them.

Masks where the card data was obtained.
