Need help surviving a hated job

Im stuck in n a job I HATE wuth a passion. I work for a large aerospace manufacturer and had a great job until the project I worked on finished. I was then redeployed into a data entry type job.

The job is torture its the most boring un simulating soul destroying job ever. I'm over qualified for it. It uses NONE of my knowledge or techical skills. I've applied for other roles but things move so slowly it takes ages to get from application to interview.

The company is so over the top with PC nonsense that the interviews take no regard to qualifications or technical ability (because only hiring qualified engineers for an engineering role is discrimination against unqualified people right!)

I dont want to leave the company because it is mostly a good company but I cant stand this job any longer. I can't hang in another 6 months to go through an another application process.

Im at the point of just walking out I don't even care about a reference. Im thinking of nust throwing this career away and starting from scratch.

Being transparently fair is not "PC nonsense". If your company are really interviewing people who clearly do not have the qualifications or experience set down in the person specification, then that has nothing to do with equalities, and everything to do with incompetence. And the same applies to any employer who needs to take six months to recruit to a post. Many of our employers take,"PC nonsense" very seriously and can complete recruitment in 6-8 weeks from start to finish.

Personally, I'd think that an income is more important than boredom - unemployment is also very boring, and not nearly as well paid. And in these times, once toy are out of work it may be very hard to get back in - many employers recruit internally or favour internal applicants. There aren't a lot of large aerospace employers around, so your options are few.

My friends husband is an engineer for a large aerospace employer - probably the same one! He was becoming bored of his job - it held no challenges because he'd done it for several years. He asked for advice from me and I suggested talking to his line manager about it. Seven weeks later he was in a new job with new challenges. So my advice would be to speak to your manger or your HR development staff - there may be other options that haven't been considered.

Don't just walk out, a good reference is worthwhile. If you are determined to leave, then plan leaving by finding something else and giving proper notice.

You will have no doubt made many friends & contacts working on the project. Have you let them know you'd relish a new opportunity?

Have you got a linkedin profile that's up to date?

Are there any networking events you could get along to?

Have you thought about teaching engineering?

    The world is your oyster.

What have you done in the last 6 months to change your situation since your last thread on the same subject?

I've just read through your previous posts on the same subject, and it seems that the problem has actually been going on for a couple of years rather than a few months. I think it doubtful that the company will change its processes so you really have a few options (1) Speak to your line manager and see if there is anything else available which is a bit more challenging (2) look for another job outside your current company (3) put up with what is driving you mad - not a good idea for somebody of your age, in my opinion.
Working in a high-tech industry you have the additional problem that technology and methodology are both moving on and you aren't moving on with them. Leave it much longer and you may find that your skill-set is no longer relevant to potential employers.
  • Relax - the job could very well leave you.

I have a hard convo coming up to let the person know who I started my temporary job with that I'm going. Hope my brain hasn't gone to sleep after these last 3 months.

Like you in a very good company where personal development is king but one who makes redundancies all the time and it isn't much fun really knowing you are moving the customer toward self service which means the job is going anyway.
  • Yes I've been in the situation for 2 years and I've tried all sorts of development schemes and tried to get other jobs.

The process of applying for internal jobs takes 6-9 months from application to finding out if you got the job or not.

I've tried to do a work sponsored education program to gain further qualifications only to be told current role don't need it.

The job interview system used is a joke it takes no account of skills, experience or job fit but instead scores your ability to say as many corporate buzzwords while answering stupid questions like"name a time you created efficient synergies" each buzzword has a number this number is added to your "score" when used. The person with the highest score gets the job regardless of qualifications.

    Yep great system eh?

Ah - I hadn't realised that this was a two year stint. Ok, unfortunately I would have to say that if they actually wanted you in their employment, they'd have found you a role by now. This screams "stick person in a corner until they get fed up and leave". For whatever reason it would seem that you are not likely to get anything internally - I'd definitely start looking for another job.
  • This company thinks that the job they have given you is the best you are capable of. If they didn't they'd give you a better one.

We can't possibly know if they are right to think that. If you think you are capable of better, go out and get a better job. Why on earth have you stuck to internal applications for two years when you are unhappy? I would have been applying to other companies after a month.
  • Why have I stayed? because I moved half way accross my country and settled down can't exactly just go back.

And aerospace companies aren't like tesco one in every town they are few so there isn't much choice to apply externally unless your talking about an entire career change.

Im capable of much more I've been running my own business on the outside doing design and engineering for multinational clients. My skills, talents and knowledge are wasted in this role.

This is an oxymoron. It is 'mostly a good company' but not the bit you are in.

It's like saying that I was a senior executive at McDonalds but was demoted to burger flipper and I will continue to do this because it is mostly a good company (no disrespect to burger flippers).

Dont show any loyalty to companies. You wont get anywhere...
