  • I haven't read them, no, what's that got to do with anything? I was just expressing amazement that a form could be so long!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Welfare Rights Officers are at local councils and will complete the form with you. If you attend hospital then the hospital social worker will be an expert in completing them.

Yes they are very long and very difficult for people to fill in as they ask questions which are personal and can be upsetting as they draw attention to every details of a person's disability, which many people find hard to confront as they have learned to 'cope'. To fill in the form they need to be thinking how things are different to what they have been in the past or compared to someone without their condition(s). The forms take an hour (absolute minimum) to two hours or even more to actually fill in and the person claiming would be wise to keep a diary of how daily activities affects them. This is why it's best to get the help of a benefits adviser such as found in CABx and other benefits help organisations. It is easier to help someone who is actually there than online as an adviser can actually see and hear how the person is.

    sdw,

Unfortunately you cannot view the whole 'story' of the OP, as he has a habit of editing and deleting his own posts after others have posted, in order to make others look bad. This is even more skewed by arguably 'selective' editing by the boardguide.

I always set out to give people a non judgmental and balanced opinion. However, if someone is blatantly rude to me, and takes their offensiveness to the extent of private messaging abusive messages, then you have to understand that my patience will only go so far.

If you are unsure of my comments, you are free to read the posts of the OP which are still available to view. You will note that he even managed to upset those of the DFW, who have to be the most warm and welcoming people on MSE.

Fran, from what I can work out from your last post, you have posted the same that I have written several times, that an open internet forum is not the place for someone with severe mental health problems.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • dmg, yes abusive private messaging is way out of order, there is no need for that and I don't blame you for being annoyed.

I completed an Attendance Allowance form for my husband. We were refused.
More out of annoyance than anything I decided to try again a year later, but this time I had the assistance of a Welfare organisation who apparently fill in loads of these forms. She was convinced that my husband was a 'shoo-in' for the benefit. Again the answer came back as no, but my point is that I thought I filled the form in better on my own. It wasn't difficult.

I do get somewhat annoyed that anyone over 65 has to go for Attendance Allowance rather than DLA with it's mobility element. Appears to be very discriminatory to me. Never mind though, he is now on insulin for his diabetes so perhaps we will try again.

No-one has to post on this thread/board. If there any abusive posts or pm's please contact [Removed by Forum Team] and the Forum Team will deal with them. Please don't post personal comments or irrelevant stuff on this thread, the intention of the Benefits Board is to help and support people with their entitlements and comments like the ones that have been on this thread must put off other posters from asking questions.

If personal comments are not kept away from the Benefits board I will close the thread for the Forum Team to decide about. That would be a shame as the OP has requested the thread stay open in order to get the help he needs.
