It seems like you are moving from your problems to an issue of altruism, or campaigning. My approach is at odds with this and is based on common sense, streetwise behaviour and being savvy. It sounds like you may have been the victim of cowboy builders. If so remember a golden rule - for a cowboy builder to exist there must be an ample supply of cowboy clients.0

its not just a matter of altruism, I believe they have committed an offence as regards:
The Consumer Protection from Unfair Regulations 2008
Part 3 lists the offences, most of which you wouldnt realise are offences and are done by a lot of tradespeople.
the law is catching up with their stealthy trickery.
but its something technical and I would need to go to a regulator or a lawyer to know for sure,
the thing is that the google maps reviews shows they have done this before to others.
I went to the company specifically to avoid cowboys because they had all the credentials:
FENSA, FMB, ip, ELECSA, Gas safe
cowboys are characterised by 2 phenomena: they dont follow the rules, AND they invent prices afterwards.
so if I settle privately I am allowing them to break the law0 -
@Furts
your suggestion of QS has helped, by following that and phoning around I visited a chartered surveyor who will evaluate the carpentry and another of the extra works. It will cost me 360 including VAT, but I hope I will either recoup that or it will at least give me some certainty. The builders themselves will be sending me a discounted offer, I can then use the chartered surveyor's report to assess that. The chartered surveyor will also assess not just the cost but what has been done.
I am approaching the problem from multiple directions, that way I will have different courses of action.
You mentioned Project Manager or Clerk of Works had this been earlier, can you explain further about that and how I would find such for any future work?0
