Virgin Pure / Credit Style

I have been contacted by Credit Style who were passed my details from Virgin Pure to chase an outstanding debt of circa £200.
I did have an account with Virgin Pure, and cancelled about 14 months ago when we moved house, there was no outstanding balance at that time.
On phoning Virgin Pure, it appears that although they have a note to say that the machine was collected, they did not terminate the account properly... and the monthly fees have been accruing since then.
They have my current address on the system but I have not received any correspondence from them.
I've spoken to Virgin Pure and they have told me that they will get this cleared and update the debt collection agency, etc but I am concerned about the impact on my credit score/report (I have had a couple of credit card applications declined in the last month, could this just be a coincidence?)
Should I put in a formal complaint? Are there any additional steps I should take?
Thank you very much in advance

The free versions to check your credit files are below:
Experian: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/creditclub
Equifax: https://www.clearscore.com
Call Credit: https://www.noddle.co.uk
Sounds like they have already given you a default if it's gone to debt collectors.
Yes if you've been declined credit more than likely it will be down to this, assuming there are no other errors on your files.
Yes you should put in a complaint and also ask for compensation for the problems the default has caused being placed incorrectly on your file for at least a year.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. Thanks.
I have checked MSE Credit Club & Noodle, but there is nothing showing at all in relation to Virgin Pure (this was a pre-paid subscription initially)... might a default appear in due course?0 -

Virgin use Equifax / Clearscore.
That Credit Style have started chasing has no bearing on whether you have a default or not though. They chase plenty of alleged debts that are not credit related and won’t affect your credit report. In these cases people tend to get a letter or two from Keeble Hanson Solicitors (who tell you to ring a number that will just go back to CSL) before they give up and go away.0
