Congestion charge hike for pre 2006 cars

When the real-world tests of Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel cars show many of them are massively over the permitted limits, I can't see how these standards can be used.
It's a bit strange, the journalists and independent testing companies have shown these standards aren't worth the paper they're written on, yet the politicians and regulators still base their regulations around them.
Really what's needed is to admit the reality, they're worthless, and start putting the UK fleet through real-world tests and categorising and restricting it accordingly.
If we know a certain Euro 6 diesel car spews out NOx like a factory chimney, why let it drive through London just because it's got it's got a Euro 6 badge attached. It's all a bit strange really.0 -

But any diesel (or petrol) can drive through London - no matter how much filth it spews out.
That's the whole problem with this stupid T charge - pay £10 and keep on polluting.
Kahn said this morning on TV that "London now has the world's toughest emissions standard" that is just plain nonsense - what it has is the 'highest charge to be allowed to enter'
Half of German cities have MUCH tougher standards - there any vehicle less than Euro 4 is banned from entering the city - no matter how much the driver is prepared to pay.
What the Germans have is a windscreen sticker system that displays the Euro number of the emissions.
The sticker has to be bough for a one off charge of €10
I can only repeat that this London charge is a money-making rip-off - nothing else.0 -
Still unsure on how charging more money reduces the air pollution - if Khan really had a set of balls, he would just ban the pre Euro IV cars.
That'd screw over the occasional users. The congestion charge does largely what it's meant to - discourage regular users of combustion engines driving, encouraging either hybrid/electric or public transport.
This change sounds like it'll affect very few people; those with an 11+ year old car and spend £200/month in congestion charge fees, of which presumably most can upgrade to 2007 (10 years old) or newer car to save the additional £200/month.
They should be expanding the park and ride options, though. There should be absolutely no reason for the vast majority of cars to drive into London.0 -
This particular egg you have applied to your own face. Euro IV (sic) does not apply to cars: it's a European toxicity emissions standard for trucks, buses and large goods vehicles.
Can you substantiate this?
Everything I can find on the web (and my own memory) says it applies to all motor vehicles.0 -

Are you sure?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_emission_standardsEuro 4 (2005) for any vehicle—98/69/EC (& 2002/80/EC)
Edit, sorry. You're being completely pedantic here, right? You're claiming that "IV" specifically only covers trucks, buses and large good vehicles whilst "4" covers all vehicles?
Half of the internet treats them as interchangeable.0 -
Yes, I believe he's trying to a bit of a clever so and so. We all know what was meant by Motorguy's post.0

Euro IV and Euro 4 are exactly the same thing - there is NOT a Euro IV that applies to trucks and a Euro 4 that is for cars and light vehicles.0
